Mission Statement
Our overarching intention is to help create an environmentally and socially prosperous planet. Our vision is that fossil fuel industry and Indigenous workers will play a leading role in building the policy and infrastructure required to reach global climate targets. Our top-level goal is to help ensure a prosperous transition towards global carbon neutrality by 2050. Our mission is to empower fossil fuel industry and Indigenous workers to build and implement climate solutions.
About This Cause
Iron & Earth formed around the lunchroom tables of the oilsands during an oil price crash which resulted in over 100,000 oilpatch employees losing their jobs between 2015 and 2017. We realized that our trade skills were transferable to the renewable energy industry and recognized the urgency of diversifying into these technologies. Beyond the financial benefits, we were excited about the opportunity to help build a more sustainable energy future. So, in Spring 2016 we launched Iron & Earth to create a better future for ourselves, our coworkers, and the planet. We have since built a membership of over 800 fossil fuel industry workers passionate about our vision, delivered a first of it’s kind cross-cultural solar and wind training project that has upskilled 30 workers into solar and wind careers, saved the Louis Bull Tribe $10,000 in energy costs to date and generated over 150 media stories world-wide. PILLARS OF OUR PROGRAMS 1. Building a community for workers and supporters - Community is critical for individuals to create collective change. Many fossil fuel industry and Indigenous workers desire renewable energy jobs, yet lack a supportive community where they can pursue such a future. Iron & Earth brings workers, Indigenous communities and supporters together in cross-cultural learning to forge networks and pathways for positive change. 2. Developing renewable energy careers - Many fossil fuel and Indigenous workers don’t know where to start their effort to establish a career in renewable energy. We aim to provide a clear pathway by reaching workers with the message that their skills are transferable and to connect these workers with the training, resources, and networks they require to position themselves in the renewable energy industry. 3. Building support for a prosperous transition to net-zero - There is insufficient support from the public, government and industry to ensure the world reaches climate targets, while also enabling a prosperous transition for workers. Our programs build support by educating the public and key stakeholders about the tangible opportunities of diversifying into sustainable energy. 4. Developing scalable energy demonstration projects - A transition to a carbon-neutral world, within the time constraints of international climate targets, represents the most significant industrial challenge in history. We support this transition by developing sustainable energy project models that can be scaled to other communities. KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS & METRICS TO DATE Building a community for workers & supporters ● 10+ Shop Talk Nights hosted ● 800+ fossil fuel industry worker members ● 6000+ supporters ● Hundreds of relationships catalyzed and strengthened Building support for a prosperous transition ● 200+ media stories generated - https://www.ironandearth.org/media ● 2016 Workers’ Climate Plan Published - https://www.workersclimateplan.ca/ ● 2021 Prosperous Transition Plan Published - https://www.ironandearth.org/prosperous_transition_plan ● Dozens of presentations at conferences and panel discussions ● One speaker series tour hosted across Newfoundland and Labrador Developing careers in climate solutions ● Three solar training programs co-hosted ● 40+ people trained in sustainable energy (primarily fossil fuel industry and Indigenous workers) ● Thousands of workers connected with information, resources and networks to further their careers Building scalable climate solutions ● Chapters in Newfoundland & Labrador and Edmonton ● Renewable Skills Initiative for Remote and Indigenous Communities Phase 1 and 2 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEWDpXFbIc4 ● 365 Greenhouse in collaboration with the Autism Society of NFLD and Labrador - ● The Renuwell project: Oil well liabilities into solar project asset HOW WE INTEND TO SCALE OUR INITIATIVES AND IMPACT 1 - Chapters & events We aim to establish chapters in every province in Canada and many other countries where fossil fuel industry and Indigenous workers can benefit from our work. At a minimum, these chapters will host regular events and ideally, each chapter will run campaigns and develop/deliver their own projects and/or programs. We plan to support each of our chapters to host quarterly Shop Talk Nights to build and maintain a community base of engaged members and supporters. We would also like to organize more Speaker Series tours across Canada and in other countries. 2 - Campaigns We will continue to run campaigns that reshape public perspectives, media narratives, and energy policy. These campaigns will continue at a national level and increasingly at a regional level as we increase the capacity of our chapters. 3 & 4 - Projects & Programs We are currently developing three project types which may prove to be scalable: Renewable Skills, RenuWell, and 365 Greenhouse projects. We have developed three training programs which we will pilot in Maskwacis, AB in Spring of 2022 and four other communities TBA. We intend to develop additional project and program models, while scaling the projects and programs that prove impactful. 5 - Community Participation We will build our core team and capacity to ensure we can have a presence at all major sustainable energy related events and conferences. In particular, we hope to have a role in all major just transition related events and conferences. OUR REQUEST TO YOU We ask you to consider joining us in our overarching goal to help conserve our planet by helping the world meet climate targets set out in the Paris Agreement of net-zero emissions by 2050. Conservation of our planet is fundamental to all other conservation efforts. Our most immediate need is for operating funds to develop and deliver our programs across the country and eventually around the world, however, we are also seeking supporters for our various projects and programs. In joining Iron & Earth in it’s mission you will contribute to healthier communities and reconciliation efforts as together we empower fossil fuel industry and Indigenous workers to build and implement climate solutions.
