About This Cause
Buffalo Lake is one of eight Métis Settlements in Alberta with a land base that is comprised of 35,356 hectares (3.75 Townships) and has a population of 1,236 people. *Buffalo Lake is located in east-central Alberta, 200 km north-east of Edmonton and 50 km south-west of Lac La Biche, other towns nearby are Boyle and Smoky Lake. Buffalo Lake Métis Settlement governance structure consists of five elected council members, with an Administrative Staff that oversee the daily operations of our local government. Our community provides a variety of health and wellness programs in addition to various activities available for families of all ages. We support active youth participation in a variety of sports; including summer work projects which are designed to enhance their skills and to teach them the value of community and employment. We sponsor students with funds needed to take training in order to pursue their career plans. This positive approach has been beneficial to the numerous accomplishments made by Settlement members. Members have gone on to make monumental achievements – as police officers, lawyers, professional athletes, nurses, including other careers too numerous to mention. The entrepreneurial spirit is very much alive in Buffalo Lake; there are approximately 25 home based businesses that provide a variety of products and services. We have an organized social support group “the Buffalo Lake Senior’s Society”. This group meets regularly, having meetings, dinners, and celebrations throughout the year. The senior’s Centre is operated by the elders where they promote a strong community of well-being and unification. This strategy has been instrumental in setting the foundation for Buffalo Lake Métis Settlement. Buffalo Lake hosts an annual Cultural Days and Rodeo Event where professional riders and ropers compete, and includes chuck wagon and chariot races, providing great entertainment for rodeo fans. During the rodeo a talent show and a slow pitch ball tournament is held, thereby meeting the entertainment tastes of everyone. *Camping is available * at nearby North Buck Lake where there are 129 sites, 29 with power, a boat launch, wood sales, a day use area and a beautiful lake with sandy beaches. Drop by check out our rodeo; bring your camping gear, load up the family and invite your friends, we are sure you will have a wonderful time.
