Mission Statement

To allow student team members to work alongside adult professionals in a team environment to experience the agony and thrills of a science and technology career in the pursuit of a competitive, student-built robot.

About This Cause

MakeShift Robotics is a team of thirty grade 9 to 12 high school students from St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. In 2022 we will compete in our eleventh season of the FIRST® Robotics Competition. In the team’s first eleven years of existence we have competed at the highest levels including nine consecutive trips to the World Championships. We’ve been recognized with awards for Imagery, Quality, Safety, Entrepreneurship, Engineering Creativity, multiple Judges Awards, and nine Chairman’s Awards - the most prestigous award in FIRST. While we do build cool robots, what we are really building is leaders. Taking on real-world challenges, MakeShift’s dedicated students develop skills like project scheduling, structured problem-solving, conflict resolution, and public speaking. Through their mentoring of elementary school robotics teams and many public appearances, our students spread the word that science and technology careers are fun and that being smart is cool. This is not like school – there are no instructions and the outcome is entirely in the students' hands. As we strive together for excellence, we are dedicated, cooperative, passionate, hard-working, sharing, resourceful and fun to be around. We’re building partnerships with our community, local industry, and McMaster University as we shift the perception of technology in our school and our community.
