Mission Statement

The University Neighbourhoods Association Fostering unique and thriving neighbourhoods through community engagement and service delivery.

About This Cause

The University Neighbourhoods Association (UNA) oversees the major residential neighbourhoods around UBC’s campus: Chancellor Place, East Campus, Hampton Place, Hawthorn Place, Wesbrook Place, and other designated buildings as stipulated in the Neighbours Agreement 2020. The purpose of the UNA is set out in its Constitution and Bylaws. It manages infrastructure, such as street and sidewalk repairs, and regulates matters of concern in the public realm, such as parking and noise. The areas of responsibility are set out in greater detail in the Neighbours Agreement with UBC. The Agreement is amended as needed, most recently in 2020. The UNA Board of Directors manage, or supervise the management of, the activities and internal affairs of the organization, and sets its strategic priorities. All directors are elected by residents who are members of the Society. UBC appoints two non-voting observer-participants, and the Alma Mater Society appoints one non-voting observer-participant to take part in open and closed Board meetings. All residents are eligible to become members of the Society which entitles them to vote at the AGM and at Board of Director elections. As an additional service, the UNA ensures that residents have access to UBC athletic facilities and manages two community centres: the Wesbrook Community Centre and the Old Barn Community Centre. The UNA continues to grow and evolve with the communities it represents and advocates for the best interests of residents on matters relating to land use and development on the UBC campus.
