Mission Statement

Provide high-quality, person-centered community rehabilitation and care for people with acquired brain injuries to help them adapt, learn and live more independently through hope, advocacy, awareness, education, prevention, research and support across their lifespan.

About This Cause

Cowichan Brain Injury Society promotes understanding and rehabilitation to “ALL” affected with acquired brain injury (ABI) by providing education, support, and services during their lifespan. We support and promote awareness, injury prevention, education, functional interventions, case management, employment support, and promote brain health to the community, survivors and their families. This is implemented in the Cowichan area through information sessions, workshops, group and individual support, with the intention of expanding to community events such as bike rodeos, helmet safety and fall prevention. Statistics Canada 2017 reported over 3,400 people in the Cowichan area as ABI survivors. Every day there are 60 new cases of ABI in BC. CBIS fills the gap in health services by providing essential support, therapy, community resource, and the path toward HOPE for those living with ABI. CBIS is the only community-based organization providing functional interventions (physical, mental/cognitive, emotional/affective, and social functioning) using recreation therapy for rehabilitation. Recreation Therapist's scope of practice is to support individuals with disabilities through education to achieve their maximum independence using meaningful interventions, create a healthy balanced lifestyle to improve/maintain their quality of life and their well-being by using a strengths-based approach.
