Mission Statement
The Taiwan SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) was founded in 2009 with the aim to promote kindness towards, prevent cruelty to, and alleviate the suffering of animals in Taiwan by all legal means. It adheres to the 5 freedoms of animal within each department. They are as follows: Freedom from thirst and hunger ~ by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigor. Freedom from discomfort ~ by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area. Freedom from pain, injury, and disease ~ by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment. Freedom to express normal behavior ~ by providing sufficient space, proper facilities, and company of the animals' own kind if applicable. Freedom from fear and distress ~ by ensuring conditions and treatment that avoid mental, psychological, and emotional suffering.
About This Cause
The Taiwan SPCA strives to protect ALL animals and become the leader in Taiwan's animal welfare sector. Taiwan SPCA also aims to bring international welfare standards to the country through its 5 departments: 1) Animal Cruelty Investigations 2) Animal Welfare Education 3) Public Awareness Campaigns and Lobbying 4) Animal Re-homing 5) Research. The Taiwan SPCA's humane education events and animal welfare curriculum reaches out to both children and adults. Through working with public and private schools in holding seminars and classes on various topics of animal protection, the Taiwan SPCA hopes to teach children about having respect and empathy for animals starting at a young age. The Taiwan SPCA campaigns creatively to raise public and media awareness on specific issues and participates in public demonstrations and rallies. Our campaigns are combined with lobbying efforts so that we can change Taiwanese laws and regulations to better protect animals. The Taiwan SPCA receives calls and reports of abuse cases where animals are found in neglectful, stressful, exploited, and/or dangerous situations. The Taiwan SPCA does its best to investigate, obtain crucial evidence, rescue, and work with the local police and government departments to bring justice for animals who cannot stand up and speak for themselves. The Taiwan SPCA strives to increase public awareness about the laws protecting animals in Taiwan and that there will be repercussions for those who break those laws. Citizens must feel empowered to act on behalf of the animals, but won't if they feel indifferent towards animals. Therefore the Taiwan SPCA proactively works to help people see that animals are sentient beings with the capacity to suffer. The Taiwan SPCA has three centrally located adoption corners which provide visibility for our adoptable dogs and cats. Our fostering program is also crucial to help animals in need and this program encourages volunteers help socialize the animals before adoption. Our research department collects data and important information on different issues, using methods such as qualitative, quantitative, and field research. We use our research conclusions to provide government bodies with recommendations regarding animal welfare regulations, enforcement, education, and strategy implementation. The Taiwan SPCA aims to protect all animal species including pets, farm animals, marine animals, performance animals and wildlife. The Taiwan SPCA strives to create a widespread compassion and respect for animals while at the same time helping humans co-exist with animals in peace and harmony. The work of the Taiwan SPCA also includes: -proactively working with city councilors and legislators to amend animal related legislation. -participating in public hearings, seminars, symposiums, press conferences, and other meetings to provide valuable information and suggestions in regards to the issue at hand and also offering assistance to alleviate the problem. -helping community feeders of stray animals with kibble, medical, and product support. -rescuing of severely injured or sick stray animals (subsequent re-homing efforts). -providing pet behavior training for adopters, members, and the general public. -holding demonstrations, petitioning, lobbying, and holding events/press conferences to increase the awareness of certain issues and push for changes in the country.
