About This Cause
Who We Are World Vision is a Christian relief, development and advocacy organisation dedicated to working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice. Inspired by our Christian values, we are dedicated to working with the world’s most vulnerable people. We serve all people regardless of religion, race, ethnicity or gender. Our Vision Our vision for every child, life in all its fullness; Our prayer for every heart, the will to make it so. Our Core Values We Are Christian - We seek to follow Jesus – in his identification with the poor, the afflicted, the marginalized; in his special concern for children; in his respect for the dignity of women equally with men, in his call to share resources with each other; in his love for all people without discrimination or conditions. We value people - We act in ways that respect the dignity, uniqueness and the intrinsic worth of every person and we practice a participative enabling style in working relationships. We are committed to the poor - Together we share the quest for equality, peace, reconciliation, and healing. We are stewards - We are faithful to the purpose for which resources are entrusted to us and manage them in a manner that brings maximum benefit to the poor. We are partners - We commit ourselves to know, understand and work closely with communities, donors and other implementation partners including government counterparts. We are responsive - We are responsive to life threatening emergencies and opportunities to serve the needs of our partners and staff. History Born from the Tragedy of War Reverend Bob Pierce was an American missionary in China in the midst of the nation’s violent civil war. In 1947, he encountered a young girl named White Jade who had been abandoned by her parents. Taking sympathy on the poor child, Rev. Pierce gathered what money he had on him and implored a family, who had already taken in six other orphans, to care for her. After returning to the United States, he continued to send the family money on a regular basis. With outbreak of the Korean War, Rev. Pierce once again witnessed the many orphans and widows displaced by the fighting. He was moved by the sight of these unfortunate children and prayed, “Let my heart be broken with the things that break the heart of God.” He then began to call upon fellow Christians to donate their time and money to help poor souls in war zones and World Vision was born. Rev. began building an organisation dedicated to helping the world's children, and in 1950 World Vision was born. The first child sponsorship programme began three years later in response to the needs of hundreds of thousands of orphans at the end of the Korean War. Over the next several decades, World Vision expanded its work throughout Asia, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Resources from child sponsorship assisted poor children with food, education, health care and vocational training. World Vision Taiwan – Developing with Our Country World Vision Taiwan was established in 1964 when caring donors overseas helped to support orphanages, children’s homes, leprosariums, and rural medical clinics across the island. In 1974, after World Vision Taiwan had been providing services in Taiwan for 10 years, the organization achieved an important milestone. World Vision Taiwan reaching out deep into Taiwan’s remote mountainous areas and outlying islands. World Vision Taiwan established 10 Sponsorship Service Centers in disadvantaged areas with the aim of helping 1000 of the nation’s poorest children, many of whom are members of Taiwan’s indigenous tribes. Centers in these rural areas helped lay the foundation for World Vision Taiwan’s community-based children’s assistance work. Following Taiwan’s economic boom in the 1980’s, World Vision Taiwan also achieved its own miracle. In 1985, after accepting 20 years of gracious help from people around the world, Taiwanese sponsors themselves began to help meet the needs of the nation’s disadvantaged children. In 1990, World Vision Taiwan reached another important milestone. In addition to support for disadvantaged children in Taiwan, the aid organization gave opportunities for sponsors and donors within Taiwan to help children around the world as part of World Vision’s global development and relief partnership. Through the Child Sponsorship Program, the 30 Hour Famine, and many other development programs, the love and compassion of the Taiwanese people were able to cross national boundaries to those affected by poverty, war, and hunger around the world. Through the generous donations given over these past four decades, World Vision Taiwan has cared for the poor and disadvantaged in rural Taiwan, including remote mountain areas, outlying islands, and coastal regions, while also assisting with the problems faced by residents of modern cities. This outpouring of care has spurred the people of Taiwan to also support humanitarian relief programs for the children of the world. Taiwan’s love is felt in over 70 countries around the globe, accompanying countless poor children as they grow up, helping disaster survivors as they work to rebuild their lives, and witnessing the joy that development brings to disadvantaged communities.
