Mission Statement

Bauen Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the tropical ecosystems of Latin America through climate action, biodiversity conservation, and the promotion of indigenous and local knowledge. Our mission is to restore and protect ecosystems using nature-based solutions, with a focus on community participation, social equity, and environmental justice. We believe that the sustainable future of our planet depends on integrating local communities into decision-making, fostering their leadership, and honoring their ancestral knowledge to tackle global environmental challenges.

About This Cause

Bauen Project was founded with the vision of catalyzing ecological restoration and biodiversity conservation in the most vulnerable tropical ecosystems of Latin America. Originating in the heart of the Amazon, the organization was formed out of reflections on the importance of indigenous and local knowledge for protecting nature, particularly during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. By working in collaboration with local communities, Bauen Project drives innovative solutions that integrate ancestral practices with modern science, promoting climate resilience and ecosystem regeneration. Our programs focus on two key areas: 1. Nature-Based Solutions (NbS): We implement projects that harness natural processes to address environmental challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss. These projects include ecological restoration, wetland recovery, mangrove conservation, and watershed management. By restoring degraded tropical ecosystems through community-led reforestation and habitat protection, we aim to regenerate 150,000 hectares of forests by 2030. Our Toolkit for Biodiversity provides a practical set of tools based on local knowledge to strengthen community initiatives in biodiversity management. 2. Regenerative Tourism: We promote a sustainable and regenerative tourism model that empowers local communities, encourages environmental stewardship, and educates visitors on the importance of conservation. Working in areas such as the Amazon, Chocó, and the Andean páramos, we help create tourism experiences that benefit both visitors and ecosystems, fostering sustainable livelihoods while preserving natural heritage. Through a collaborative approach with local communities, we generate long-lasting, direct impacts not only on nature conservation but also on the well-being and autonomy of the people who depend on these ecosystems. Bauen Project works with a multidisciplinary team of experts in regenerative tourism, conservation, environmental sciences, and community leaders across key territories in Colombia and Latin America. Throughout our journey, we have established strategic partnerships with various international organizations and networks, such as Cities 4 Children and Audubon Americas, amplifying our ability to create positive changes in the regions where we operate. Furthermore, we actively participate in international forums on biodiversity, including the United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP), where we present our conservation and ecological restoration initiatives. Our commitment also includes training young leaders and creating Community Science Centers, which will be operational in different regions of Colombia by 2027. These centers will function as hubs for social innovation and conservation, collaborating with local institutions to develop solutions to regional environmental challenges. We believe that solutions to the planet's most urgent environmental problems must be inclusive, equitable, and rooted in local realities. At Bauen Project, we work hand-in-hand with communities, respecting and promoting their rights, knowledge, and ways of life, while building a more just and sustainable future for all.
