Mission Statement

The defence of the rights of people with cognitive disabilities is our driving force, the effective enjoyment of their rights is the task we take on every day, and it is only possible to guarantee their autonomy, their freedom and their happiness when they discover their abilities, their skills and turn them into their life project. Today we work with children with cognitive disabilities between the ages of 0 and 5 years old in a program we call “Us first”. This program has its origins in the stories that families tell us, stories that speak of the inhumane, uncaring and disrespectful way in which doctors give the news that their child has a disability. Our task is to accompany these families, to give them all the information and to walk with them in the early stimulation program, where the best therapists are the fathers, mothers and siblings. As of today, we have 45 families in this program. 135 children, adolescents, young people and adults with cognitive disabilities attend the Presential Program every morning at the Fedar farm and, accompanied by the Arts and the Earth, we build a training proposal for life and for work. This proposal is based on recognizing their gifts, empowering them and turning them into their navigation chart for life. The program called “House Planning” is designed and intended for the indigenous, Afro and peasant populations of our region, those remote places where options are scarce and where children and adolescents are more vulnerable. We work to train families and together with them build small goals that we conquer. We map the territory and involve the various actors in a project of respectful and proactive inclusion. Today we have 28 families linked to this program. We could say that in 39 years of continuous life, hundreds of children and adolescents have passed through the foundation, developing their skills, building paths of dignity, this is our great motivation to not lose heart and continue to open roads, where they and their families can go in search of better tomorrows.

About This Cause

Our foundation was born in 1985 from a group of professionals and a group of mothers and fathers, concerned about the few alternatives of training and therapeutic attention for their sons and daughters with disabilities. Together we decided to create a non-profit organization, legally constituted before the government of Cauca, the Chamber of Commerce of Cauca and the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare ICBF. We call it Fundación para la Estimulación en el Desarrollo y las Artes (Foundation for development stimulation trough arts), as an acronym we know it as FEDAR. It is an organization where 80% of the associates are the families of the people with disabilities who are part of the programs that are executed in it, we transform the clinical therapeutic paths and we look for the arts and the earth as allies. This is how the Fedar farm becomes a huge open notebook, where amazement, research, discovery and encounter become a daily experience that permanently incites them to conquer new steps that will lead them to discover their abilities and skills. Our Foundation is recognized nationally and has led programs at an international level. For 10 years we were the coordinators for Latin America of the programs of Very Special Arts International, an organization created by Mrs Kennedy Smith, with headquarters in Washington D.C. and branches in more than 70 countries. We have travelled around our country, to the most remote places, training teachers, leaders, health personnel, in the care and defence of the rights of persons with disabilities. We have a central headquarters in the city center and an agro-ecology farm, where the arts live for walking with our beneficiaries, on the outskirts of Popayán, department of Cauca. We also have a headquarters in the Department of Putumayo, Municipality of La Hormiga, where 60 children, adolescents and young people with disabilities meet. We have a team of psychologists, speech therapists, physiotherapists, nutritionists, specialized teachers, art teachers, teaching assistants, farmers, nurses, kitchen staff, accountants, and a board of directors made up of 10 people, where the families, the work team and the founding members are represented. Our organization has an auditor, a certified public accountant, appointed by the general assembly to guarantee the faithful fulfilment of our statutes and our mission, as well as the neatness in the management of the accounts and resources.
