Mission Statement

ENSURE THE PROTECTION AND THE EDUCATION OF ORPHANED AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN IN DRC IN ORDER TO REINTEGRATE THEM INTO SOCIETY.

About This Cause

BUMI is a humanitarian, development organization, centered on the protection and education of vulnerable children in Lubumbashi, DRC. With a population of 2.3 million inhabitants, Lubumbashi is the second largest city in the country and is subject to an influx of displaced people from surrounding warzones and a rural exodus due to the important mining activities around the city. Thousands of children end up on the streets, while those who stay with their families are starving, and lack education and basic health intervention. Other children join mining sites where they are exploited, use drugs or are prostituted to the miners. Congo is also known for the “child witch” phenomenon which originates from poverty and traditional beliefs. BUMI improves the lives of these vulnerable children by rescuing them and striving to allow them to live and grow up in dignity. In this context, BUMI provides them with food, healthcare, education and training, leisure and love. BUMI also provides psychological support as well as legal and administrative assistance. BUMI works to reintegrate the children into their family where possible, and to support the reunited families. Above all, BUMI’s objective is to offer these children a brighter future. Since its creation, BUMI has cared for more than 1500 children. Many of them have become responsible adults while others have been successfully reunited with their families. Each year we receive and protect around 250 children although this figure is constantly growing. Mid-2020, more then 200 children were living at BUMI and 500 vulnerable children were attending our schools. BUMI main objectives are: 1. Protecting and educating youth and children in difficult situations: street children, abandoned children, children accused of sorcery, orphans, orphans of AIDS, economically and sexually exploited children. It includes: - Fostering, caretaking, and education of children in reception centres, transit houses, and family houses. - Reinsertion and family reunification, economically oriented support to families of children in difficult situations. - Primary, secondary, and professional education of disadvantaged youth and children. - Social reinsertion through the professional training of disadvantaged youth: farming and agriculture, sewing, masonry, ironwork, artisanal work. 2. Health - Implementation of health centres in disadvantaged areas: mother and child protection (MCP), nutritional education, caretaking of malnourished children, maternity, health care. - Raising awareness about Health and hygiene in the surrounding communities. - School medicine. 3. Community sustainable development - Teaching and training of unemployed youth and families via resource-generating activities: small-scale breeding, agriculture and market gardening in order to alleviate their poverty. - Creation, training and supervision of rotating savings and credit groups among underprivileged families. - Food self-sufficiency and autonomy action through our “BUMI Resource” programme to support children: poultry, sheep, cattle, and fish farming, vegetable growing, and agriculture. BUMI objectives are achieved through our different programs, each of them placing the emphasis on a specific need: 1) The Reception Center (40 children) in Kamalondo district, is centered around the rescue of the child, understanding the child’s background, family research and reintegration process. We then carry out post-reintegration follow-up to be certain that the child receives proper care when back in the family. If necessary, the program pays for school fees and helps the parents run income generating activities. The program also deals with legal actions and administrative procedures such as birth certificates and orders of placement. 2) The Children’s Village (160 children) is centered around the well-being of the child. The children live in family houses in which an educator plays the role of a “new” mum. The objective is to help the children overcome past trauma, to give them love, self- confidence and belief in their potential. 3) The 2 BUMI Schools provide quality education to our resident children and underprivileged children (500 children) from the area. An early childhood development centre focuses on the toddlers, while some teenagers are put in apprenticeships. Sports or craft workshops are organized during their leisure time. 4) The agriculture and farming program provides 25 youth with skills to run a small-scale farming business and become self-sufficient. 5) The sewing workshop provides 15 youth with excellent training in design, tailoring and sewing of clothes and accessories that are sold in order to generate income. 6) The Community Health Centre provides our children and underprivileged individuals (2000 beneficiaries per year) in the community with basic quality health care, vaccination and screening campaigns, free access to drinkable water, trainings on hygiene and nutrition, etc.
