Mission Statement

Active Zone Outdoor mission is to connect young people with opportunities to develop better mental health through sports and outdoor activities and be actively engaged in society achieving personal fulfillment. Good levels of mental health and well-being enable young people to live their life in a positive and meaningful way and cope better with changes and challenges. The organisation plans and coordinates a variety of activities and sports giving unique opportunities to young people to be engaged and active in the outdoors and getting to know non-popular sports such as rock climbing, archery, sailing, kayaking, sup, windsurfing, cycling, orienteering, geocaching and others. Through participation in sport and outdoor activities, the organisation aims at developing the mental and physical health of young people. Furthermore, the organisation due to its growing network around Cyprus managed to have a strong impact in many local communities where projects and activities have been implemented promoting sports as means to enhance social inclusion, integration and cohesion. Youth with fewer opportunities, and primarily youth with disabilities and financial difficulties, are in the focal center of the organisation and customized activities are organized to serve their needs. Examples include projects promoting rock climbing, football for people with visual impairments as well as shooting for people with mobility impairments and orienteering for youth with learning difficulties.

About This Cause

“Active Zone Outdoor” is a Cyprus based non for profit, non-Governmental organisation established in Larnaca in 2019 under the overall missions to achieve a better mental health and wellbeing of young people through active engagement in outdoor and sports activities and participation in the society. Specifically, the organisation aims to: 1) Promote sports and outdoor activities for all with emphasis on youth with fewer opportunities as a vehicle to enhance well-being, mental and physical health of youth; 2) Actively engage young people in local and European level contributing to social change, social cohesion and integration, 3) Highlight the connectedness between sports and outdoor activities with the natural environment and underline the urgency of environmental protection by pinpointing the significance of the environment in the healthy living of human beings; 4) Raise awareness about the protection of the environment by undertaking citizens science and policy initiatives to promote ocean and mountains literacy among children, youth and relevant policy and decision makers as a means to exploit sports activities as vehicle for enhancing public dialogue, active citizenship, and policy reform; 5) Promote European Values through Intercultural Education; 6) Support the European Ecological Network “Natura 2000” through the protection of natural areas for species of flora, fauna, birds and habitats; 7) Develop cooperative relationships between other institutes, federations, public bodies, sports organizations, non-governmental organizations in the local, national, European and international level; 8) Cultivate and improve the skills of youth at a personal and professional level by being involved in the design and implementation of sport and outdoor solidarity activities and thus enhancing their employability and transition into the labor market. Acknowledging, on the one hand, the power of sports and outdoor activities in enhancing mental health, well-being and social integration, and on the other hand, limitations (e.g., financial, equipment) often discouraging youth from actively participating in sports, Active Zone Outdoor prioritizes young people with opportunities in its long-term established strategy. To this respect, the organisation has identified as its primary target group youth, with limited access to sports and outdoor activities, including but not limited to youth with disabilities (i.e. visually and mobility impaired youth) as well as youth with financial difficulties in an attempt to facilitate their smooth inclusion and integration into the society. Finally, identifying the under representation of women in sports and outdoor activities, the organisation incentivizes the participation of women and girls in its activities as a means to benefit from the engagement with sports and outdoor activities and also break stereotypes related to the capabilities and potential role of women in sports. Finally, the organization is composed of a number of professionals and experts in the field of education, sports and research who provide their services and expertise towards the implementation of projects and activities as well as volunteers who get the chance to acquire knowledge, competences and skills in the organization.
