Mission Statement

We change lives. We provide life-changing experiences, strength and tools to live and to recover for seriously ill children and their families. All of these are free. We believe that the sun always shines above the clouds.

About This Cause

Bátor Tábor (Camp of Courage) organizes therapeutic recreation camps for seriously ill children and their families for already 16 years. We return cancer-afflicted and chronically ill children to their carefree childhood. Bátor Tábor Alapítvány (our mother foundation)- started its activities in 2001 in a former pioneer camp near the town Hatvan, 60 km from Budapest. The campsite has been gradually built and today it is a modern campsite that meets all the requirements for the realization of the therapeutic recreation, and at the same time it is in every way adapted to the needs of the seriously ill children. Bátor Tábor is Central European center of therapeutic recreation for seriously ill children from Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Poland. “Laughter may very well be the best medicine.” (Paul Newman, founder of Serious Fun Children’s Network) Bátor Tábor is the only center of its kind in Central Europe that is able to offer children with serious illness unique experience while providing them with the care that these children need. Through experience, children are healing better and returning back to life. Our goal is that the children discover their own possibilities/skills (instead of the limitations) and their self-confidence and self-esteem increase. All of this also has an impact on improving their health status, reintegration into normal life and better communication skills. We give to seriously ill children the opportunity to forget about their illness and be kids again. We are changing their lives. The therapeutic recreation is a mental therapy, which has a long-term effect on children. This is proven by a survey of the Yale University questioning parents whose children attended one of the Serious Fun Children's Network camps. Bátor Tábor is a full member of this association which has very strict criteria and requirements for its members - safety, medical, therapeutic, nutritional. Through therapeutic recreation the children with oncological diagnosis will get the strength to fight their illness, greater self-confidence, better communication with peers, and then return to normal life. Our camp is not a summer camp in the classical meaning of the term. We place children outside of their comfort zones through special experience. By overcoming their fears, they can recognize that they are ready to confront not only the challenges involved in their adventures, but also their illness. We put smiles on their faces; we give them power for their struggle. Children have the opportunity to try activities that they never really had the chance to (due to their condition), or never really believed that they could do – the high ropes center (also for wheelchairs), horseback riding, canoeing, fishing, archery, photography, arts&crafts, theater, sport, music and dance. For children, we provide 24-hour health care, at the campsite there is a medical building. Except of the Czech children, children from Slovakia and Poland participate in the international sessions. Camps are organized with the help of the volunteers who we train for the work with seriously ill children as well as the therapeutic recreation. One of the International camps is in English, so children have the opportunity to spend several days in an English-speaking environment. The second International camp is in Hungarian. In the camp there are, of course, Czech volunteers who help with communication. Camps are completely free of charge for children, including travel costs. The Bátor Tábor Foundation is financed exclusively by corporate and individual donations. Our main regional supporters are: Vienna Insurance Group, Glaxo Smith Kline, Visegrad Fund, Serious Fun Children’s Network. We do not receive any governmental support. Our financial operation is audited by Deloitte every year. After weeks spent in the hospital children have the opportunity to enjoy their carefree childhood and the life-changing experience. The recruitment of campers takes place at the oncology departments in Prague, Plzeň and Brno, in Bratislava and Košice and in 10 Polish hospitals.
