Mission Statement
At the beginning of the 21st century, nearly half of the world population still lacks access to freely reported news and is deprived of a knowledge that is the basis for individual and collective choices. Reporters Without Borders is a non-profit organization that defends the freedom to be informed and to inform others throughout the world. Almost thirty years after its inception, Reporters Without Borders has the experience and on-the-ground support to defend freedom of information on a global scale.
About This Cause
-- WHAT WE BELIEVE -- • Promoting the essence of journalism. Reporters Without Borders defends an ideal of journalism independent from factions, ideologies and religions, based on thorough reporting and in-depth investigation, which must continue to inspire. • Securing an essential human right. UNESCO’s constitution says the unrestricted pursuit of objective truth is indispensible to human dignity and freedom. As said by Win Tin, a Burmese journalist defended by Reporters Without Borders, “Freedom of information is the freedom that allows you to verify the existence of all the other freedoms.” • Building individual capacities. Freedom of information helps to develop the “capacities” of individuals, understood in the sense of having control over their lives. Freedom of information is a sine qua non of growth in all the social, economic and political possibilities. • Defending the basis of democracy. Civil society must know the exact facts behind the choices made by state and private sector actors. Whatever the political system, it cannot reflect divergent interests and internal contradictions without independent watchdogs capable of challenging established authority. -- WHAT WE DO -- • We offer material assistance to war correspondents in order to enhance their safety • We morally and financially assist persecuted journalists, as well as their families • We continuously monitor attacks on freedom of information worldwide and denounce them • We act in cooperation with governments to fight censorship and laws aimed at restricting freedom of information -- KEY FIGURES -- • A network of 130 correspondents around the world • Over 1,000 press releases in 6 languages issued yearly on violations of freedom of information • 3 photo albums published per year, averaging annual sales of 150,000 copies • A website, rsf.org, which registers 200,000 one-time visitors monthly. • In 2019, RSF organized 15 trainings for 289 journalists (38% of them women) and trained 48 media outlets • In 2019, RSF’s assistance desk wrote 212 support letters and disbursed 110 individual grants • In 2019, RSF launched 4 petitions that received over 190,000 signatures
