Mission Statement

The mission of Banlieues Santé is to fight against social inequalities in health and thus, to reduce the gap in life expectancy between workers and executives in France, currently of 6 years on average. Social inequalities in health refer to the fact that the more people live in difficult conditions, the worse their health is. Health determinants include housing, employment, food, access to sports or culture. Our programs consider all these factors in a global approach to health as defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO), namely a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not only the absence of disease or infirmity.

About This Cause

Banlieues Santé organizes emergency actions to address the health needs of people in priority neighborhoods. The association also offers places for reception, training, and awareness-raising on health issues for the residents of these areas. 41% of residents in priority neighborhoods forgo healthcare, compared to 30% in other neighborhoods. 37% fewer private healthcare professionals in priority neighborhoods compared to other neighborhoods. 45% of residents in priority neighborhoods have a health problem. The solution Banlieues Santé works for quality care and access to health information for all. To achieve this goal, the association has developed two types of actions: In the short term, with the implementation of emergency aid: distribution of hygiene kits, access to an ophthalmological consultation and a free pair of glasses, awareness-raising actions, etc. In the long term, with various support programs to make residents active participants in their health: the Café des Biens-Aînés, the Café des Femmes, and the project of a Health Center in Marseille.
