Mission Statement

Unis-Cité pioneered Civic Service in France 25 years ago by giving the opportunity to any young people aged 16 to 25 to join an innovative community engagement program. The Civic Service model designed by Unis-Cité aims at serving the youths as much as the community.

About This Cause

Over the last 25 years, Unis-Cité has been designing a model to make citizen engagement a conventional step in the youth’slives. Unis-Cité convinced the French government to create a public institution called the “Civic Service Agency” in order to scale-up the model and foster a citizenship spirit among the new generations. Set up in May 2010, the Agency officially works hand in hand with Unis-Cité. Since then, Unis-Cité has become a genuine experimental lab dedicated to invent new ways for youth to commit to the society and to empower youth who are the most excluded. Unis-Cite has already engaged 18500 young people, 30% of whom live in underprivileged areas. Unis-Cité presents in 60 cities all over France. After the terrorist attacks in Paris in 2015, the French government decided to develop civic service massively with the objective of enabling 350 000 juniors to experiment civic service every year starting 2018. In this context of massive deployment, Unis-Cité’s strategy is to pursue its mission for the youngsters and to embrace the government’s stake to develop massively and effectively civic service in France. Unis-Cité’s key principles are: • Ensure a high level of educational, social and ethnic diversity among teams, and contribute to the social cohesion and solidarity between young people, • Contribute in a significant way to the fight against both exclusion and environmental issues by recruiting a growing number of young people in the frame of the Civic Service, • Operate a significant positive impact on the youth: 10% of the time is spent to help youth prepare their future with professional coaching sessions, civic training, profession discovery sessions… At the end of their engagement with Unis-Cité, 82% of them confirmed that they would keep on volunteering in the future, and 89% acknowledged that Unis-Cité contributed to their professional and social integration (*Source: assessment realized by Valérie Becquet, sociologist, 6 months after the end of Civic Service). Missions for young people : Through a 6 to 9 months full-time commitment, teams of young men and women from all cultural and social backgrounds dedicate themselves to the community. The selection of young people who join the program is based upon a single criterion: their motivation. This means that there is no pre-requirement of diploma or skills. During their commitment, young people act to improve their community through a wide range of projects developed in partnership with local charities, homes for the elderly, municipal services, schools or leading citizen groups…
