Mission Statement

80% of the world's richest biodiversity is found on the traditional lands of indigenous peoples. These people are the Guardians of Nature and the Planet. The indigenous peoples of the Amazon protect the world's largest tropical forest on which the climate and the survival of all of us depend. Those living in Brazil have an even more important role because the largest area of Amazonian forest is in Brazil. On their lands are ecosystems that are among the richest on the planet and a multitude of endangered species: animals, insects, plants... that they protect from the soya fields and pastures that surround them. For them to continue to protect the Amazon and to protect us, these peoples need support to protect their lands, but also to preserve their cultural heritage and their mother tongue, the latter being the pillars of their harmonious relationship with Nature. It is our duty to support them!

About This Cause

Founded in 2002 by ethnologist Emilie Barrucand, Wayanga supports the indigenous peoples of Brazil in the preservation of their cultural heritage, their languages and the protection of the Amazonian forest in which they live. Wayanga’s projects respect their wishes, their needs, their daily life and their politics. Its objectives are as much social, cultural as they are environmental. Celebrities supporting Wayanga's actions: Nicolas Hulot, American designer Diane Van Furstenberg (president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America), actors Grégori Dérangère and Maud Buquet. Marion Cotillard and Guillaume Canet are its ambassadors. OUR PROJECTS: In Brazil, the languages and cultures of indigenous peoples are under serious threat, as is the Amazonian forest in which they live and of which they are the guardians. Our actions enable these peoples to safeguard their languages, cultures and ancestral knowledge and to continue to protect the ecosystems on their lands. We have been working with the Kayapo and Paresi Indians for 18 years. The land of the Kayapo Indians covers 11.5 million hectares - 3 times the area of Switzerland and covered with Amazonian rainforest - and that of the Paresi covers 1,118.918 hectares. These two peoples have a very important role to play and need support to continue their role as guardians. ACTIONS ALREADY CARRIED OUT: -A study carried out with the Kapayo people to identify their knowledge that is threatened and in urgent need of safeguarding. Audio preservation of all this oral cultural heritage with the elders who are now for many deceased; but we were able to safeguard their memories in time. - Donation of multimedia equipment to safeguard the memories of the Kayapo and Paresi Elders. - Training young Paresi and Kayapo students to use these archiving tools. - Creating and handing out a School Book in Paresi schools to protect and learn the Paresi language, which is seriously threatened with extinction. Children now use this book in schools. -Organizing meetings with political leaders of the different indigenous peoples of Brazil to exchange experiences and strengthen their unity. -Funding training courses (accounting, Spanish...) for young Kayapos chosen by their communities to defend their peoples by working in the organizations that protect them. CURRENT AND FUTURE ACTIONS: -Upcoming distribution in the Kayapo villages of their cultural heritage recorded and safeguarded in the form of USB Keys, each accompanied by a small book mentioning for each recording, its title, the category to which it belongs (myth, ceremonial weeping, rituals), as well as the name of the Elder being interviewed. - Creating and distributing school books in Paresi schools to safeguard their cultural heritage (mythology, songs...). - Building a Centre for the Protection of Paresi Culture and Forest on Paresi lands, in order to preserve their crafts, archives made about their cultures as well as photo and video material.... to invite elders from different villages to share their knowledge with young Paresi, but also to invite Brazilian children from the neighbouring city (mostly children of landowners responsible for deforestation) to attend in order to raise their awareness of the importance of respecting the forest and in the long term to reduce deforestation and establish a peaceful relationship between indigenous and non-indigenous people. -Organizing an Assembly of Kayapo youth from a multitude of villages so that they can reflect on their future, organize to protect their culture and better understand their national and international rights. Professionals (lawyers, ethnologists...) will be present to support the young Kayapos in their reflections and provide them with the information they need. THE FUTURE OF THE PLANET AND THAT OF OUR CHILDREN DEPENDS ON THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES OF THE AMAZON Support Wayanga and help the Amazonian Indians to preserve their cultures, languages and the Amazonian forest!
