Mission Statement

Living Gaia stands for a holistic approach to the promotion of health and well-being of the Amazon rainforest. We support the Indigenous Huni Kuin people to preserve their culture, their land, and all living beings of the Amazonian ecosystem. OUR GUIDELINES: 1) PROTECTION OF THE FOREST: We are establishing a protected area of approximately 16,800 hectares. Of these, about 16,000 ha are primary forest with a rich flora and fauna. Approximately 800 hectares will be reforested. 2) EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN: We support women in building their organizational structures. In all projects, women play a leading role and hold decision-making positions. 3) INDIGENOUS SELF-DETERMINATION: The Huni Kuin are part of all phases of the projects. They will take back the management of the land that originally belonged to them. 4) HEALTH: Physical and mental health are inextricably linked to access to intact nature. In addition, we support the Huni Kuin with infrastructure for clean drinking water and with medical care. 5) FOOD SECURITY: Malnutrition is a major problem in the region. By implementing agroforestry systems and fish farming, we support food diversification and protein availability. 6) ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE: Create self-sustaining income opportunities from agroforestry to cosmetic production to ecotourism, combining ancient traditions with modern approaches: Showing the world that the forest is worth more intact than cut down. 7) CLIMATE PROTECTION: The protected area of 16,000 ha of Amazon forest stores approx. 400,000t CO₂ per year. This is about 36,000 times more than a person in Germany emits per year. Intact forests guarantee precipitation in large parts of South America.

About This Cause

Since 2013, Living Gaia e.V. has been working with the Indigenous Huni Kuin in the Jordão region in the Brazilian state of Acre. The non-profit organization based in Berlin pursues a holistic approach and focuses on all areas of the Huni Kuin's lives, such as protecting their land, empowering women, health and education. Together with the local Huni Kuin and Brazilian partner organizations, projects such as the purchase of a 160 square kilometer piece of forest as a protected area, the founding of a women's association and the construction of solar systems have already been implemented. Living Gaia is currently collecting donations for the construction of drinking water wells, a women's center, the establishment of agroforestry systems, and for training and technology for the permanent protection of the territory. It is our concern to connect the knowledge and wisdom of the indigenous cultures of the Amazon with the knowledge and wisdom of "western" cultures. From this dialogue, both sides can learn and support each other in shaping their future. That is why we are happy about the close relationship we have established with the Huni Kuin. The Huni Kuin, like many indigenous peoples in Brazil, are facing growing changes, threats and challenges. Especially in recent years, we have seen a massive increase in violence, displacement, forest clearing, etc. Supporting local indigenous societies and protecting the Amazon rainforest is a huge task. We help the Huni Kuin to increase protected territory and strengthen their culture and traditional ways of life. For thousands of years, the indigenous inhabitants of the Amazon have been the central actors in the protection of this special habitat. Over hundreds of generations, they have not only protected the forest from exploitation and destruction, but have concretely helped shape this ecosystem and contributed to its diversity. The mission of Living Gaia e.V. is to support the Huni Kuin in this work. Our special focus is on the cooperation and empowerment of the Huni Kuin women.
