Mission Statement
How we help: Wherever German soldiers and police officers are deployed abroad, Lachen Helfen supports children in need. For many years, after the Balkans (IFOR / SFOR / KFOR / EUFOR Althea / EULEX Kosovo), the focus of our aid projects was on Afghanistan (ISAF / EUPOL Afghanistan / RS (NATO)). At the same time, more and more activities have developed in the Sahel region of Africa over the last ten years as part of the EUCAP Nestor and EUCAP Sahel Niger, UNAMID, UNMISS, MINUSMA and EUTM Mali missions, with a focus on Sudan, South Sudan, Mali and Niger. However, soldiers and police officers are also deployed in other crisis regions, for example in the Middle East (training support for the German Armed Forces in Iraq / Counter Daesh) and in the Caucasus (EUMM), and the association has also been helping remotely in Ukraine since 2017. Multinational CiMiC Command An integral part of many aid projects carried out by soldiers on site is civil-military cooperation (CIMIC) with the German Armed Forces, which today reports to the Multinational CIMIC Command in Nienburg an der Weser. The logistics and correct execution of the measures are generally ensured by the Bundeswehr Operations Command (EinsFüKdoBw) near Potsdam. That is why they are so effective. Occasionally, we also work with partner organizations that are already operating on the ground and have direct access to the affected population - or vice versa: they join us and support the Lachen-Helfen measures. For many years, these have included Biker-Brummi-Hilfe (BBH) e.V. for the transportation of donations in kind in the Balkans, Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe e.V. in northern Afghanistan, Vision Hope Int'l in Afghanistan and Syria, Human Plus e.V. in Afghanistan and Sudan, Malteser Int'l in Kurdistan (northern Iraq), the Wulf Foundation for the construction of drinking water wells in Niger and, last but not least, the Rotary Club Neandertal for aid projects in Ukraine, where Lachen Helfen itself is not on site.
About This Cause
The impetus for the realization of such projects is almost always provided by soldiers and policemen who, while carrying out their official duties and missions and through targeted reconnaissance, become aware of particular hardship and serious grievances. In order to provide targeted help, they determine the need for aid projects, primarily in schools, kindergartens and orphanages. Lachen Helfen provides financial means for the realization of the projects locally and unbureaucratically. In Afghanistan, Lachen Helfen is developing a strong commitment to supporting, renovating and building new schools and so-called "basic health centers" (small hospitals). In a country where illiteracy is a very big problem, investments in education and medical facilities are the best prevention of poverty and the best precaution against fanaticism, terrorism and violence. Police officers and soldiers quickly and realistically assess the needs of the people. In addition, they also guarantee the necessary security so that the donated goods reach the people in need without detours and remain with them. Of course, ethnicity does not play a role in the distribution. Due to the gratifying development of donations in recent years, an orphanage, new "Basic Health Centers" and schools in Afghanistan, as well as the equipping of additional schools in line with the needs, could be financed from our own resources. In close coordination with the Bundeswehr Operations Command, the respective relief efforts are controlled and implemented quickly, flexibly and unbureaucratically in cooperation with the police and soldiers on site. Planning, implementation and completion are closely monitored by German police officers and soldiers. Whenever possible, necessary services, building materials and relief supplies are organized and paid for locally so that the investments also support the local economy. What is our track record? Lachen Helfen has already collected more than 2,300,000 euros in donations. A large part of it through benefit concerts of music corps of the German Armed Forces, donations from companies and initiatives of the association members in Germany and in the areas of operation. More than 500 individual projects were successfully completed. These include smaller immediate measures such as the procurement and distribution of shoes, blankets, coats and longer-term planning and construction measures such as the renovation of schools, the construction of orphanages, schools or hospitals.
