Mission Statement
"creating jobs together" - to enable youth to build up a sustainable professional future for themselves in the wide field of agriculture. By training youth in "Holistic Agribusiness Solutions".
About This Cause
CREATING JOBS TOGETHER Sabab Lou empowers the poorest of the poor in sub-Saharan Africa. The name of the foundation is Wolof, a West African tribal language, and means “What you must do to attain your goal.” Our goal is to end poverty by creating jobs together. And that is exactly what we do in agriculture – a sector chosen with good reason. 60 percent of the population in sub-Saharan Africa, a total of 645 million people, live in rural areas. The vast majority work as farmers. But agriculture contributes just 15 percent of gross domestic product. The development and improvement of agriculture therefore offers great potential for combatting poverty. We actively make use of this potential. Our current projects support young people and small farming families to cultivate vegetables and grains more productively, and therefore profitably. To this end, we offer training, helping them build skills not just in market gardening and farm management, but also in commercial matters. Our focus is firmly on entrepreneurship. We enable people to run their businesses independently – making them self-reliant, with no need for subsidies and donations, as quickly as possible. In other words, we seek to help people to help themselves. Our training center in Ballingho, The Gambia: THE VISION It started with the vision to give unemployed youth a realistic and sustainable perspective for their future. As a result, our curriculum was developed: „HOLISTIC AGRIBUSINESS SOLUTIONS“ The infrastructure was set up with the support of German foundation Sabab Lou, involving private partners as well as the German government, implemented by Rural Development Organization, RDO. The village of Ballingho offered the land for setting up a boarding school and a cultivation area of 12,5ha. The constructions started in spring 2019, by 7th of September the Gambian Youth Project, GYP, was inaugurated. THE TRAINING CONCEPT The concept of RDO is a 2-year dual training in agriculture and entrepreneurship, covering modules in vegetable gardening, pomiculture, agroforestry, soil and irrigation management, fertilization methods and seasonal protective measures, cultivation planning and recording. Our holistic approach covers at present live-stock management and poultry farming, aquaculture will be added soon. The aim is raising animals in a healthy, thus most productive way. Housing, feeding, health care and reproduction is taught on day-to-day basis, accompanied by corresponding theoretical lessons. But more than that, we invite students to become creative, offering and exploring other most diverse business options like food processing and product development, marketing and sales concepts, agri-tourism and hospitality, etc. The entire training includes 80% practical and 20% theoretical training. All professional options are complemented with entrepreneurial training, such as profit & loss calculations, revenue streams, customer care, market analysis, creating data banks, business coaching, etc., resulting in individual, thoroughly calculated business concepts. THE BASIS OF TRAINING All training materials have been adapted to the local situation and economic needs of The Gambia. Four agricultural handbooks have been specially created and compiled, as well as entrepreneurship modules prepared. We train and teach them to become successful agripreneurs.
