About This Cause
The Norddeutsche Mission (NM, Bremen Mission) is an international joint church organization comprising four German Protestant churches, the Bremische Evangelische Kirche, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oldenburg, the Evangelical Reformed Church and the Lippische Landeskirche, as well as two West African Presbyterian churches, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church Ghana and the Eglise Evangélique Presbytérienne du Togo. Spiritual and financial matters - scarcity and wealth - are shared in ecumenical solidarity. Gender and diversity guidelines promote an equal community. The NM was founded in Hamburg in 1836 and began its missionary work in West Africa in 1847 - in pre-colonial times as far as historical dates are concerned - in what is now Ghana and Togo. The preaching of the gospel was primarily aimed at the Ewe ethnic group. In 1964, the Eglise Evangélique Presbytérienne du Togo formulated what mission is for the NM through the ages: Mission is “The whole gospel for the whole person.” That is why sustainable social work, education, agricultural advice, medical aid, the promotion of women and village development and advocacy are the fields of action of mission, alongside evangelization initiatives and the commitment to church training. The Eglise Evangélique Presbytérienne du Togo is very intensively dedicated to the task of promoting the development of young congregations and churches in its neighboring countries. There are close contacts with Christians in the Sahel state of Niger. The NM supports the sustainable development programs of the churches in Togo and Ghana and works with them to promote church and craft training. Finally, the NM facilitates transcultural learning in the Global South and North by participating in the volunteer program “weltwärts” (North-South [in cooperation with the UEM] and South-North), through student consultations, international choir projects, the exchange program “Sichtwechsel” and at theological consultations. Since August 2019, the NM has been a member of the “Ecumenical Network for Climate Justice”, having already campaigned for the establishment of eco-clubs in previous years, particularly in Ghana. The “good life for all” should become a reality. This is why the NM in Bremen also joined the “Aktionsbündnis Wachstumswende” in 2018. In Togo, the NM is working with other stakeholders - including Bread for the World - to protect human rights. This is a task that it has been carrying out for years due to the prevailing political conditions in Togo. The “Projet pour un Accompagnement Oecumenique du Togo” promotes democracy education and peace work. In Ghana, the parliament passed a law in 2024 that criminalizes and severely punishes homosexual lovers and people who do nothing more but talk about other forms of gender. The law has not yet been signed by the president. Together with Bread for the World, NM supports a non-governmental organization (Center for Religion and Public Life) in Ghana that campaigns for the human right to sexual self-determination.
