Mission Statement
To rescue surplus food and distribute it to those in need while educating young people about the elmination of food waste and sustainability.
About This Cause
In February 1993, the Berliner Tafel was founded as an alternative remedy to the existing food surplus and our throwaway society. Approximately 2700 volunteers at the Berliner Tafel work together to collect surplus food, which is then sorted and distributed to those in need. The work of the Berliner Tafel is based on three pillars: 1) BERLINER TAFEL CLASSIC. Over 400 various social programs that prepare meals for its visitors are supported with food deliveries. 2) LAIB und SEELE. An initiative organised by the Berliner Tafel, participating churches and the rbb radio and television network supports individuals in need by distributing food at 48 parish distribution points throughout Berlin. 3) KIMBA. Children and teenagers, regardless of their economic background, learn how to cook vegetarian meals in 2 different formats: KIMBAexpress: a decommissioned train car located at the Deutsches Technikmuseum in Berlin which has been equipped with a teaching kitchen as well as a food laboratory and a garden for growing fresh herbs and vegetables, and KIMBAschule: cooking classes that take place during the cold winter months in the kitchens of participating schools.
