Mission Statement
We aim to help blood cancer patients who are at risk of dying – all over the world. For many patients, the only chance for a cure is the transplantation of healthy stem cells from a matching donor. Finding and contacting this one donor is the life-saving task of the charitable nonprofit organization DKMS – the German Bone Marrow Donor Center. The German Bone Marrow Donor Center’s operations are focused on the long-term fulfillment of our vision: conquering blood cancer. In pursuing this goal, we have come a long way since DKMS was founded in 1991. However, we have not yet conquered blood cancer. That is why we work tirelessly to become better and to save even more patients.
About This Cause
Founded in Germany in 1991, DKMS has since become the largest network of stem cell donor databases in the world, with over 10 million donors. To date, more than 67,000 DKMS donors have given patients throughout the world a new chance at life. More than 18 DKMS donors every day are donating stem cells or bone marrow for patients both in Germany and abroad. This success motivates us to continue to grow in accordance with our vision – a vision for which we assume responsibility throughout the world: deleting blood cancer. Every human life counts, everywhere throughout the world. All over the world, too many blood cancer patients continue to die. DKMS wants to give people new hope for a chance at life – not only in their own countries, but in other countries as well. An international community exchange system ensures that the search for stem cell donations can take place on an international level – and if necessary, that the donation is organized across national borders. The portion of global stem cell donations mediated by DKMS is already approximately 30.4% (source: WMDA Report 2012). However, in order to actively improve the situation of blood cancer patients further, international growth is important. For this reason, DKMS has founded partner organizations abroad. Furthermore research is very important for us because it helps saving lives. At DKMS, there are numerous research projects and quality programs in various specialty departments that are constantly optimizing our work.
