Mission Statement

The Sternenbrücke children’s hospice helps terminally ill children and young people to the age of 27 to live a dignified life with their parents and siblings until their death. The hospice also provides support for the families after the loss of their child.

About This Cause

According to estimates, there are up to 22,000 children and young people living in Germany suffering from illnesses or disabilities that will shorten their lives to such an extent that they will die while still children or young people. To provide these children and young people and their families with the most support possible during their difficult time, the Sternenbrücke children’s hospice opened in May 2003 as a pilot project for Northern Germany. The Sternenbrücke children’s hospice helps terminally ill children and young people to live a dignified life with their parents and siblings until their death. The hospice also provides support for the families after the loss of their child. Since May 2010, terminally ill young adults up to the age of 27 have also been admitted to an annexe building. This means that young people over 18 can come to Sternenbrücke, with their families, to benefit from residential respite care in the final stages of their life. To provide a professional service to the whole family, the Sternenbrücke employs experienced specialists in paediatric and adolescent medicine, pain therapists, specially trained and highly-qualified healthcare and (paediatric) nursing professionals, a palliative care nurse, the hospice managers as well as grief counsellors, family therapists, (remedial) teachers and social education workers. To be able to provide the affected families with additional support outside the Sternenbrücke through the experience gained at the hospice, the Kinder-Hospiz Sternenbrücke Foundation has set up other projects. These projects include Germany’s first outpatient children’s hospice nursing service for Hamburg, socio-educational support and the surrounding area as well as extensive training and further training facilities under the auspices of the Sternenbrücke children’s hospice academy. The daily costs for the full care and support of a family in the Sternenbrücke children’s hospice is on average 1.380 euros. Around 60 percent of that is covered by the health and nursing care insurance companies. This means that the rest is not covered. Most of our families are not able to pay for it themselves. Quite often they are in very difficult financial circumstances because caring for their child affects their working life and any savings will have been spent on caring for their child. The Sternenbrücke children’s hospice wants to be available to everybody (regardless of their financial situation) and therefore has to constantly rely on donations. The annual need for donations is currently 2.1 million euros.
