Mission Statement
Soup and Socks e.V. is a non-governmental, non-religious organisation that aims to support refugees in Greece. As a first response to the fatal situation at the European borders in the beginning of 2016, the team of Soup and Socks headed out to serve delicious soup on public places in Athens and to establish a community kitchen in the refugee camp of Katsikas. In August 2016 the organisation initiated the current project HABIBI.WORKS as a more empowering and more sustainable approach to the still challenging circumstances. In more than 10 workshop spaces, refugees from camp Katsikas and Greek locals have the opportunity to get active and creative, to do something they enjoy and to build items they need, to gain new skills and to unfold their potential. Time that otherwise would have been lost while waiting to cross the next border can be used to improve living conditions and to prove talent. The motivated team of Soup and Socks wants to set signs of solidarity and to inform about the situation on-site.
About This Cause
The current project HABIBI.WORKS, initiated by the organisation Soup and Socks e.V. in August 2016, is the Do-It-Yourself response to the challenges refugees and Greek citizens are beeing confronted with since months. It is the conviction of the organisation Soup and Socks that the people coming to Europe can be an enrichment for our societies - presupposed we provide structures that allow them to unfold their potential. Habibi.Works is providing a platform for people to learn, to teach, to do something they like and to build something they need. The project building offers a kitchen, a wood workshop, a metal workshop, a textile printing atelier, a creative area, a studio for radio and music and a Media Lab. People can bring in their knowledge and experience, make their own decisions and realize their ideas. In the Kitchen, a fresh and tasty meal is prepared for all the so called “Makers” every day. In the Camp you can find bakers, pastry chefs and gifted chefs from different countries. People bring recipes they know to a delicious fusion and learn from each other. The wood workshop is one of the most frequented areas in Habibi.Works. People from the camp use tools and materials to repair or build items they need in their daily life. Shelves and tables are taking shape, fitting the exact needs of their makers. Not only makers of camp Katsikas but also teams of other camps join for a day, realizing the ideas they have in mind and gaining new experience. In the textile printing atelier, amazing designs by people from the camp start their lives on textiles and clothes, each of them a proof for the talent and creativity of the people from the camp. The metal workshop is the cradle of multiple projects. Many people living in the camp are very skilled when it comes to metal work. Fixing bikes or building the beautiful structure of what we call the DOME are just two examples of the activities realized in here. In Camp Katsikas, the people searching for freedom and a life under dignified conditions need to remain passive, waiting for others to make decisions. Their abilities and their knowledge are not valued, they often have very limited possibilities to show their talents and potential. This is something the project Habibi.Works aims to change. In the creative space you find sewing machines, equipment for jewelry, painting, candle production and many other things that offer the possibility to create items that are both useful and beautiful. The Media Lab is a place where new ideas are born every day - no border can stop them. Experts and beginners find the door open to take steps into a new world here. No matter whether it is about coding, about basic computer knowledge, about generating fancy products with the laser cutter or learning how to use a 3D-printer – there are lots of reasons to get excited. Besides the specific support in Katsikas it is important for Soup and Socks e.V. to spread information about the situation in Greece to other countries and to raisee awareness for a need to act. Habibi.Works is unique in its approach to empower people. Support the project and become part of a solution! It works.
