Accompanying Haiti's rural communities in integral development projects, ensuring their collective and intergenerational well-being.

About This Cause

CONTENTS I– INTRODUCTION Accompanying communities and even regions on the pathway to development requires a diagnosis relating to the expectations of sustainable development as conceived at the level of the United Nations Organization (UN). « Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs ». In this respect, working together with disadvantaged groups requires identifying, inventorying and building strategies together to tackle the challenges faced on various fronts. In fact, development is a complex process that requires diagnoses in which all stakeholders must be deeply involved. In view of the goals of sustainable development, a strategic approach will have to take account of its components, and how it will manage to identify its strategies in the wake of these goals in order to contribute to their attainment, and on the other hand to provide the means to meet the objectives of its action plan. The Organization's prospects for the five-year period (2024-2028) of implementation of its integrated formal and non-formal skills education program are set out in its action plan. In fact, this plan takes into account projects that will reflect the spiritual, socio-economic and environmental dimensions towards the collective and intergenerational well-being of the populations and target groups served. II - PRESENTATION OF THE ORGANIZATION ACTION ET TRANSFORMATION Action Et Transformation is a social organization dedicated to community development. It works alongside grassroots community organizations (CBOs) and other social entities seeking the pathway to development. Through its vision, it expects to see notable changes in the groups and clusters of communities it serves. To achieve this, it targets vulnerable families, children, young people and women living in extreme poverty. We believe that by bringing together the combined efforts of all these different actors, we can create the natural synergy that will lead to a better tomorrow for all those who are strongly committed to the pathway of change and development.  VISION: To transform disadvantaged rural Haitian communities in their mindset, socio-economic and environmental dimensions.  MISSION: To accompany Haiti’s rural communities in integral development projects, ensuring their collective and intergenerational well-being. The organization is structured as follows: A Consultative Council which oversees the tasks to be carried out by the Executive Committee or Board which, in turn, is responsible for coordinating the execution of the strategy set in motion by the organization. At this point, the institution has this blueprint for establishing partnerships with the grassroots units in the communities it serves. To achieve this, the integrated education approach to formal and non-formal skills is prioritized. What does this approach involve? • Integrated development • Intervention strategies (social, educational, formal and non-formal programs) • Strategic Orientations (Partnership, Voluntarist and volunteering of beneficiaries summarized in community participation). III. CONTEXT, CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIC ORIENTATIONS The Republic of Haiti, located in the Caribbean, shares the island of Haiti with the Dominican Republic. It occupies the western part of the island, with a surface area of 27,750 km2, which is very mountainous compared with the neighboring Republic, which occupies the eastern part, with a surface area of 50,500 km2. Since its birth in 1804, Haiti has faced problems of social inequality between the old free and the new free. And this social situation led to internal struggles between the different social classes for an equitable distribution of the wealth generated by the young nation's natural resources. Even today, in the first quarter of the 21st century, socio-economic conditions are getting worse by the day, and even worse for the most vulnerable. The crisis of governance, the absence of legitimate representatives resulting from democratic choices, has led the country into an unprecedented crisis. The country's key institutions are inoperative. Gang violence and the intensification of their activities are considerably slowing down the already precarious living conditions of the marginalized. Urgent action is needed almost everywhere in the country. Unfortunately, the failure of state institutions has led the entire country into difficult crossroads. According to the report issued jointly by the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Haiti has the highest number of people facing high levels of acute food insecurity, with 4.72 million people, representing 26% of the total number of people in the region. Guatemala (4.6 million), Honduras (2.64 million) and the Dominican Republic (1.55 million) follow. . Haiti remains the poorest country in Latin America and the Caribbean, and among the poorest in the world. In 2022, Haiti had a GDP per capita of US$1,745.9 and a GINI index of 41.1. According to the UN Human Development Index, Haiti was ranked 163 out of 191 countries in 2022. . Haiti's natural environment is crumbling, with vegetation cover at less than 2% according to FAO estimates, while that of the neighboring Republic is estimated at 39%. Every time it rains, the Republic of Haiti experiences difficult times, with the physical environment deteriorating day by day. The uncontrolled cutting of trees for firewood and charcoal is aggravating the deterioration of arable land, most of which is located in the Mornes. In rural areas of Haiti, basic social services are lacking, and people are left to fend for themselves. The target group of our integrated education program for formal and non-formal skills in rural areas is made up of children, young people and women. Schools in rural areas operate in conditions that do not meet pedagogical standards (inadequate physical space, untrained teachers, non-application of the state education and training curriculum). Because of extreme poverty, linked to unemployment, unproductive agriculture, lack of essential infrastructure, precarious sanitary conditions and lack of education, parents of children in rural areas face enormous difficulties in changing their socio-economic lives. Action Et Transformation's response to the gloomy current situation in Haiti is essential. A&T must strive to profile new, intelligent and innovative strategies for supporting the targeted communities. Aware of the situation in which people in rural and mostly marginalized regions live, this program, based on Action Et Transformation's vision and mission, directs the choice of actors and partners towards populations where the state's presence in terms of education and basic infrastructure seems almost non-existent. In its integrated educational program of formal and non-formal skills, the Organization intends to pursue a policy focused on academic, vocational, health, environmental and life skills training. And it intends to make integrated development its battle-horse for the complete education of individuals towards their empowerment. In order to materialize the organization's vision through its mission, the focus will be on strategic objectives in relation to the economic, environmental, social and organizational context. CHALLENGES In relation to the number of children of school age and those who actually attend a training center. The number of children who should be in the classroom but who are idle and ready to become potential delinquents, disturbing the social order and causing enormous losses for the country. The number of young people, women and single-parent families in the workforce who, unfortunately, lack the life skills to engage in income-generating activities. IV - STRATEGIC ORIENTATIONS In order to provide an appropriate response to the challenges facing communities, Action Et Transformation has adopted four strategic orientations: ■ Accompanying rural communities in development projects that can empower young people from organized groups and build a better tomorrow. ■ Work on their transformation from a spiritual, socio-economic and environmental point of view. ■ Promote an integrated education program of formal and non-formal skills in geographical departments and/or areas of intervention of the Action Et Transformation organization. ■ Cooperate to achieve the organization's priorities and adapt to new circumstances in a constantly changing world.
