Mission Statement
As a media outlet financed by its readers Mérce gives a voice to those who are forced to the peripheries of society by Hungarian and global social systems. Hence Mérce puts priority on issues concerning workers, those living in poverty and women, the media in general, education and healthcare systems and the condition of democracy. Our articles and op-eds aim to represent a mindset that helps to interpret daily news in a social and community context. Hence besides single pieces of news we provide intelligible narratives. With these narratives we initiate social action that creates real social change.
About This Cause
Mérce is a daily news source in Hungary that does not require the funding of oligarchs, capital investors or party coffers, but operates on regular readers' micro-donations. This means a no-nonsense leftist tone and a decided view on politics as we deal with the news of Hungary and the world. Our five key areas of interest are: education, healthcare, poverty, and workers' and women's issues. *** Our response to the pandemic and the following crises *** As a media outlet dedicated to give voice to the experiences of the most vulnerable social groups, we facilitated the formation of a taskforce with the participation of many NGOs, civil society organizations and expert groups working on diverse issues such as housing and homelessness, labor rights, fight against climate change, care work, combating violence against women and cooperative enterprises. Together we are mapping the different community-based solutions that can help the survival of people in times of crisis. By mapping and presenting these solutions, we hope to provide our audiences with inspiration and help to organize themselves and cooperate in order to overcome these difficult times. In the upcoming period we will focus on fortifying the connection with non-governmental organizations, trade unions and informal grassroots groups. These groups are either vitally affected by the crisis, or working on ways out of the current situation and on solidaristic answers to its detrimental social consequences. Bolstered by the new and reinforced alliances, we will do our best to provide up-to-date and useful information on topics as labor rights, housing, violence against women, and about the perspectives of those who live in poverty. We hope that this type of work bears value not just for today, but will have impacts on tomorrow as well, paving the road for a strong long-term unity and cohesion. With your donation you participate in strengthening independent journalism in Hungary. As you may know, this is a task with special importance lately. Thank you!
