Mission Statement

MSC- (Movement for Scavenger Community) is a dynamic non-governmental organization (NGO), founded in 2009 and registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. In 2015, our registration was updated under the Haryana Registration and Regulation of Societies Act, 2012 (Haryana Act No. 1 of 2012). Established by a passionate group of young social activists and professionals from the scavenger community, MSC aims to empower individuals through targeted initiatives in education, organization, and economic diversification. At the heart of MSC’s mission is the commitment to foster a community-led movement dedicated to the development and liberation of those involved in manual scavenging. We recognize the tireless efforts of grassroots leaders who are striving to eradicate manual scavenging practices and improve the overall quality of life for their communities. Through our work, we have forged valuable connections with various community-based movements across different regions of India, which enriches our collective efforts. MSC's approach is centered around three pivotal areas: Education, Leadership, and Entrepreneurship. Our innovative "Fellows for Equality" program plays a crucial role in this framework, aiming to cultivate and empower youth leadership within the manual scavenger community nationwide. The fellows serve as vital catalysts, facilitating and spearheading initiatives that enhance educational opportunities, improve employability skills, and promote entrepreneurial ventures. Additionally, they act as a cohesive network, connecting disparate communities to a shared mission and purpose. Currently, MSC operates six ‘Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Community Resource Centres’ strategically located in various states, each led by inspiring fellows from our Fellows for Equality program. These centers are hubs of learning and resource sharing, offering invaluable support to individuals seeking to uplift their communities. The demand for new centers has been growing rapidly, as an increasing number of community members express their eagerness to engage with the mission inspired by Baba Saheb Ambedkar. This heightened enthusiasm and commitment will undoubtedly further strengthen our movement towards equality and empowerment. The marginalized communities in Villages and Cities, particularly manual scavengers, confront significant hurdles affecting their socio-economic well-being. These hurdles are evident in their limited access to education, employment prospects, and substandard health conditions. The central aim of this project is to comprehensively tackle these multifaceted issues. This endeavor will kick off with a detailed baseline assessment of the marginalized community. Subsequently, the project endeavors to establish a versatile Community Learning Resource Centre known as the 'Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Community Resource Centre'. This center will function as a focal point for providing educational and skill development opportunities. Moreover, the Resource Centre will extend assistance in career counseling and facilitate entrepreneurial connections for the youth and residents of the community. Additionally, the Resource Centre will offer free evening tuition classes for school-going students, with a focus on encouraging all youth to pursue higher education and seek admission to universities. The primary goal is to underscore the importance of education while aiming to broaden career prospects beyond traditional roles such as sweeping and scavenging work. This initiative seeks to uplift and empower marginalized communities by fostering avenues for personal and professional development.

About This Cause

The Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Community Resource Centers (CRC) are an initiative of the Movement for Scavenger Community (MSC), founded in 2009 by social change leader Vimal Kumar. These centers aim to empower marginalized scavenger communities across India through education, leadership development, entrepreneurship support, and social advocacy. Since 2015, MSC has established five CRCs, providing a safe and supportive space for learning and self-improvement. The CRCs focus on enhancing educational access, developing leadership capabilities, and promoting economic self-reliance. The initiative plays a crucial role in breaking the cycle of manual scavenging, poverty, and caste-based discrimination. The project is structured around four key pilars: (1) educational programs, (2) leadership development, (3) entrepreneurship support, and (4) advocacy and policy change. These centers offer a holistic approach to community transformation, working closely with local leaders and leveraging the power of education to uplift scavenger communities. The centers are managed by MSC-trained leaders from the community, ensuring that the initiative is community-driven and sustainable. Target Area & Beneficiaries The project’s initial focus is on marginalized scavenger communities across India, particularly in urban and semi urban areas where manual scavenging is most prevalent. Currently, MSC has established CRCs in five key states (Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh), but the organization intends to expand to other regions where marginalized scavenger communities face similar chalenges. BENEFICIARIES The direct beneficiaries of the project are members of scavenger communities, particularly: Children and Youth: The project offers educational programs to youth from scavenger families, with a focus on improving academic performance, career guidance, and digital literacy. Emerging Leaders: Through the leadership fe lowship program, emerging leaders from these communities receive the training and mentorship needed to become advocates for social justice and systemic change. Women and Marginalized Individuals: Special attention is given to empowering women, who are often doubly marginalized within scavenger communities due to gender-based violence and discrimination. Dalit and Tribal Entrepreneurs: The project provides business mentorship and microenterprise development opportunities for Dalit and tribal community members, helping them establish financial independence. Indirect beneficiaries include the broader scavenger communities, as the project’s activities lead to improved social conditions, reduced caste-based violence, and greater educational attainment across the population. With its roots firmly planted in the scavenger community, the Movement for Scavenger Community stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment. Through education and community-driven efforts, MSC sparks a transformative journey that will shape the lives of individuals, uplift communities, and create a better future for all. We are committed for over all Development of Scavenger Community on the Ideology of Dr.B.R. Ambedker.
