About This Cause

Chinsurah SENSE Society (CSS) has been registered under Registration under The West Bengal Societies Registration Act. 1961, since 28th October 2016. However, the organization has been running a rehabilitation intervention setup for children and adults with autism and other intellectual disabilities since November, 2012. It is mainly an initiative by parents of children with intellectual disability, though, in course of journey, many well-wishers and professionals have joined in the endeavor. The drive for this initiative was unavailability of professional support in terms of special education, therapy, etc., for children with intellectual disability in the nearby locality of Chinsurah, which is about 50 km away from Kolkata. It has been our motive to provide professional support to the special children of this suburb and surrounding rural area. CSS has been extending assessment and early Intervention services, special education, occupational therapy, pre-vocational training, vocational centre, independent living skill training, participation in sports, games and cultural activities, etc., to children in the age groups below 18 years and adults coming from all over Hooghly district and neighboring districts also. At present, the number of regular beneficiaries is around twenty-five and total number of beneficiaries since 2012 is about one hundred and fifty. We work every day to improve the life of the special children and their families. We are concerned about their respect and dignity, health and well-being, social connection, self-sufficiency, communication, self-identity and acceptance, recreation and leisure, safety, social inclusion, academic success, independent living, etc. Our concerns are reflected through our services: support, education, community, advocacy, etc. Above all we are concerned about their valued social roles, so that they can have all the good things of life. Area of our work is semi-urban and rural areas of Hooghly district and neighboring districts surrounding and including the town of Chinsurah in West Bengal. Objective: To support children/adults with Autism and Intellectual disabilities so that they get quality services, viz., early intervention, special education in an inclusive setup, required therapeutic support, vocational training, opportunities for skill development and livelihood. To enhance their quality of life (QoL) and provide support for assisted living within the society. The programs are executed through following activities: • Special Education: 5 days a week, from 10:30 hrs to 15:00 hours • Play Session: at weekends. • Art and craft sessions • Music and dance sessions • Physiotherapy and Occupational therapy sessions • Counselling and Parent Guidance • Parents Training • Vocational Training • Sheltered Workshop • Independent Living Training • Social Awareness program • Advocacy program We realize that to provide life-long support to intellectually challenged children/persons, especially in the rural/semi-urban areas, the most viable and economically sustainable support system can be a social organization involving parents and the organization must have following components among many other activities: (a) An early intervention center for special kids (up to 6 years old) and a special school facility preferably in an inclusive set-up for children up to 14 years old, (b) A pre-vocational centre for children up to 18 years old and a sheltered workshop for young adults of age above 18 years and (c) Community based group-homes for assisted living of special-adults. Our work is driven by this realization.
