Mission Statement
At Prithvi Animal Welfare Society, we provide shelter, food and treatment for 300 plus abandoned pets, elderly or infirm street dogs and cats at our facility in Kovalam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Our mission at Prithvi Animal Welfare Society is to implement an effective catch-sterilize-return program for street dogs to control stray dog population and eliminate dog-human conflict. We will make use of scientific catching methods and technology, well designed animal birth control centers and a committed team of veterinary doctors, para vets and other staff to implement this project and make Chennai a model city for stray dog population control.

We have 205 dogs and 105 cats at the shelter now. We host abandoned pets, elderly and infirm animals. These dogs and cats are too old, or weak, or have a permanent injury like paralysis. Our shelters are safe havens where they can live out the rest of their days in peace. We try to place as many animals as possible into responsible and loving homes through adoption. The shelters are well maintained, bright, airy and have a good distribution of natural light and wind that helps take care of the animals easily. They are clean, dry, and as comfortable as possible. They are well-equipped with electricity, water supply, and waste disposal to prevent disease and contamination. They are well managed with a comprehensive health care program with preventive inoculations given at the right time. We monitor each animal individually for signs of sickness or weakness. We maintain a quarantine area for animals requiring isolation. We ensure that each sick or injured animal is attended to immediately and taken for veterinary treatment, if required. We maintain the health records of each animal for reference. TREATMENT Apart from treating mange, wounds, injuries, and other diseases found in the stray animals, our medical team will focus on birth control surgeries. We do not currently have a facility for advanced surgeries; hence, we take the animals to the best veterinary doctors in the city. In this way, we provide quality services to injured animals with inputs from an experienced team of veterinarians. FEEDING The animals we have rescued are undernourished and suffer from ill-health. Most of them have skin diseases. We provide them with good quality nutritious food twice a day in our shelter. Seeing them thrive and live their best lives here is very fulfilling. We provide food daily, for the 300+ animals in our shelter. ANIMAL BIRTH CONTROL CENTER We have upcycled a used shipping container into a state of the art hospital to be able to conduct birth control surgeries in large numbers. We are currently working on adding kennels and sheds, assembling a team of veterinary doctors, para vets and animal catchers to implement our catch-sterilize-return program.
