Mission Statement

हर घर टीचर, हर बच्चे तक टीचर (Every household with a teacher): By 2025, 10,000 children out of the education system in the rural and remote areas will get access to a local community teacher champion who will enable their mainstreaming and retention in the education system through collaboration with local non-profit organizations and Government bodies.

About This Cause

In India, a staggering reality unfolds as 150 million children, one in every three, confront exclusion from the education system due to pervasive awareness gaps and a 7% learning decline during the COVID-19 pandemic, intensifying educational inequities (Annual Status of Education Report 2023). As per UNICEF, children are out of school because of six major reasons: - Poverty - Reverse Migration - Lack of physical infrastructure - Harmful gender norms - Disability - Civil Strife/Conflict Ensuring the retention as well as the mainstreaming of the children is considered to be one of the toughest challenges in the Indian Education system. LIFI addresses the multifaceted challenges in the education system through the Leadership and Development in Urban & Rural India (LeAD UR India) Fellowship, empowering local youth and community champions as Community Teacher Leaders (CTLs) to reintegrate and support children at risk. It is a paid two-years program where CTLs are mentored and equipped to work with the children and ensure their mainstreaming and retention in the education system. As part of LeAD UR India Fellowship, the following activities are undertaken: In School Program - School Library Program - we will run a library program where all children will be benefited and enhance FLN skills with better learning outcomes. - Attendance and regularity - increase in attendance and greater regularity of children will be enhanced and monitored through library program and parent investment - School Management Committee (SMC) strengthening program - enabling active role of SMC to strengthen the overall school development. Children & Youth Resource Center (CYRC) program in community - Remedial education - There will be extended support for the children who need further support as they are not able to cope in school. Other children who drop out (also includes not appropriate age for schools or are not ready to go back to school due to various reasons). - Digital literacy - The center will be equipped with necessary digital devices to support children beyond 5th grade and beyond to become digitally literate and confident individuals for future education and job opportunities. - STEM Lab - we would pilot two STEM labs in the 1st year of intervention followed by expansion in all the communities to be able support children/adolescent/youth with scientific and growth mindset which is a crucial component of 21s century skills. Target Demographic: Direct Beneficiaries: Children aged 4 to 13 years in underserved and rural communities in Delhi, MP, Haryana, Gujarat and Bihar Indirect Beneficiaries: Parent community of the above mentioned children, Local community champions as Community Teacher Leaders (age group 20 to 35 years) Geographic coverage: MP, Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana and Delhi Impact till date LIFI has worked with more than 1500 children pushed out of the education system in the last three years, having started in the middle of the pandemic. 90% of the children went back to schools as they got reopened in these multiple contexts. LIFI has worked with 35 Community Teacher Leaders (CTLs) in 5 states - Delhi, Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, and MP. Children like Radhika in one of our Delhi schools have benefitted through our work. Her initial school attendance was irregular, and she didn't feel safe or engaged. Her academic performance was below grade level, with 12% in Hindi and 50% in Maths. With LIFI’s intervention - trained the community teacher leader in activity-based Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) education, introduced morning circles for student well-being, and provided library books. As a result, Radhika began attending school regularly, felt safe, and looked forward to each day. By mid-year, her scores improved to 72% in Hindi and 79% in Math. Now in Grade 3, Radhika is thriving academically and emotionally, showcasing how targeted interventions can overcome educational challenges. Our CTLs continue to impact more children post the Fellowship. One of them was the first ever woman to have stepped out for her career from her community, joining another Fellowship in Himachal Pradesh. Another CTL runs the first ever Children and Youth Resource Centre in his community, teaching digital education to the children.
