About This Cause

Navjeet Community Health Centre is an outreach unit of the Bandra Holy Family Hospital Society. THE HOLY FAMILY HOSPITAL is a 268-bed, multi-specialty, NABH Certified, landmark institution, with a state-of-art Heart Institute. Through Navjeet since 1978 Holy Family Hospital reaches out and empowers the unreached, marginalized, the downtrodden, and the underprivileged sections of the slums of Mumbai. Since 14 years Navjeet also reaches out to the tribal hamlets of Shahapur taluka, Thane district. Navjeet strives to ensure a holistic and sustainable society, with special preference to women and children, through its various initiatives in Health, Education, Women Empowerment, Community Development and environment protection projects and covers over 35000 population. Ensuring a better tomorrow through initiatives for Children and youth:- Through Early Childhood Learning Centers (ECLC) Navjeet partners with government Balwadi to provide qualitative and value based education to around 300 children and at Covid 19 times the teachers provide online classes through videos and visits the slums to to give awareness on precautions to be taken during the pandemic and to see the living conditions of the children. Supplementary classes at Mumbai and Tribal villages supports over 120 school going children. Child-friendly and interactive teaching-learning methods, through which teachers are trained to impart learning, make it more appealing to the child. Holiday camps, sports, healthy competitions help to explore and improve upon their talents in a rich and educational environment. Presently the teachers provide online classes at Mumbai slums and regular tuition classes at the villages. 45 students benefit by sponsorship given to them for education. As part of a motivational programme the distribution of bags, notebooks and other educational materials and bicycles have helped prevent dropouts and save travel time to school. Health Camps held for Children ensure that every child gets the right to obtain the health, in order to lead a full and active life. 142 children of Navjeet Bal Parishad (Children’s Parliament) gets the right to express their views. Dance classes, tailoring classes, computer classes, skill development trainings are some of the means through which Navjeet ensures a better future of the children and the youth. Children’s groups and youth groups enable better leadership qualities among the children and the youth. Towards holistic health:- Navjeet focuses on the holistic health of the people in the slums of Mumbai as well as in the tribal areas of Shahapur taluka through health care both primary and secondary, preventive care, rehabilitative care, health education and research. Navjeet’s mission is also to eradicate the cycle of malnutrition with the simplest treatment of nutritious food to the malnourished at the villages as well as slums. Women empowerment: Formation of Self Help Groups and various women empowerment programmes enable women to realize their potential and rights. Vocational and Skill Training have helped girls and women to gain knowledge and skills to lead an economic advancement and better job opportunities. Senior citizens Programme: Monthly ration support and Get together for Senior Citizens helps them to live their old age gracefully. Promotion of peace and Harmony: Sensing the growing need not just for dialogue with people of other faiths, but also for genuine relationships, Inter Religious Dialogues are held regularly on various topics. Towards sustainable Development: Our responsibility towards sustainability of the environment has been carried out by Navjeet through planting fruit plants in the villages, constructing biogas plants, toilets, check dams, rainwater harvesting, Open wells, water tanks, solar lamps and awareness on afforestation and protection of nature. Kitchen Gardening, organic farming and various capacity building trainings, environmental awareness and livelihood trainings are aimed at protecting the rights and promoting the well-being of the poor and the marginalized. Income Generation Activities through distribution of seed kits, plants and fruit saplings have helped to improve livelihoods, fight malnourishment and build healthier communities. Navjeet have provided houses to those needing shelter. Hundreds of families are able to live a sustainable life through Navjeet financial support to income generation programmes such as goat farms, stationary shops, buffalo farms, flour mills, poultries, canteens, tailoring shops and machines. Navjeet also ensures that various government schemes are availed by the poor. COVID 19 SUPPORT Due to the Covid 19 lockdown, the sufferings of the poor are at its peak. The poor in the cities and the daily wage workers in the villages are pushed to a state of starvation. Navjeet team witnessed the struggles of the poor who are with extreme hunger, fear and anxiety. Navjeet Support During the pandemic Covid 19 are as follows: Grocery, mask and other essentials: The shortage of essential items is exacerbating hunger and malnutrition, and the starvation is making rampart among the poor. Navjeet supported over 6000 people especially of the widows, jobless slum dwellers at Mumbai slums and the landless daily wage workers at the villages of Shahpur Taluka with groceries such as Rice, Dal, Atta, Rava, Peanuts, milk packets and vitamin C tablets. Navjeet provided reusable sanitary napkins over 3000 young women. Navjeet also distributed cloth masks and N95 masks to slum dwellers and villagers. Food to migrants: To reduce the plight of the migrants who were walking back from Mumbai to their respective villages/states, Navjeet reached out to them by providing food (chappatis and bhaji) to around 1500 migrants at the highways between Asangaon and Kasara. Navjeet made use of technology to launch several online programmes. A follow-up of families was done for entitlement of food grains from Ration shops and a Survey on welfare of families during the Covid 19 period. To recover from this Covid 19 effect and to avoid a famine in the future, Navjeet provided vegetable seeds, and has various ongoing water harvesting projects to support the vegetable cultivation at the tribal hamlets.
