Mission Statement

Sakshi envisions an ‘equal’ world of peaceful coexistence where human societies realise their potential for creative and transformative capacity to deal with conflict by replacing patterns of violence, discrimination and coercion with creative problem solving, increased dialogue, and nonviolent mechanisms of social change that assure access to justice for vulnerable and marginalised groups including women, children, youth.

About This Cause

Founded in 1992, Sakshi is a Non-Governmental Organization headquartered in New Delhi, India. True to its name, which means, “Witness”, Sakshi has been an active bystander to sexual violence that plagues women, children and marginalized communities. Sakshi believes that constitutional right to equality is a ground we walk on, not a goal we aspire for. A systemic intervention for prevention of sexual and gender based violence has been Sakshi’s approach in all the work it has undertaken since its inception. In the last decade, through its flagship programme, The Rakshin Project, a gender-transformative initiative to prevent child sexual abuse, Sakshi has been working relentlessly to build a brigade of young adults, committed to #EndViolence by equipping them with 21st-century life skills to practice rights-based language and gender equality in order to prevent child sexual abuse within their trusted circles. The purpose of The Rakshin Project is to have One Informed, Skill Built Rakshin (Preventor) In Each HOME to Make Homes A Gender Equal - Safe Space, free from all forms of Gender-Based Violence with a focus on Sexual Violence and Child Sexual Abuse. If the cycle of sexual violence over a lifetime has to be interrupted, it is critical to prevent child sexual abuse. Through the partnership with the Directorate of NSS, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, GoI, the Rakshin Project has access to 40,00,000 NSS volunteers across 40,000 colleges, pan India, every two years. By skill building these 40 lakh youth to recognize child sexual abuse, address the abuser, identify allies within the families and communities, de-escalate the conflict, report the incident and access resolution mechanisms to heal themselves of the trauma they may have endured themselves as a child, The Rakshin Project has the potential of creating a social tipping point and eradicate the shadow pandemic. Sakshi has worked with individuals, communities, organizations, institutions and policy to affect systemic change over the years, using Research, Surveys, Campaigns, Publications, Advocacy, Life-skills Education, Diversity & Inclusion Audits, Gender Mainstreaming, Dialogue, Negotiation, Conflict Resolution and Transformational Leadership. Sakshi has been a pioneer in working for Gender Equality & Responsible Sexuality in India. Sakshi was the force behind the two landmark Pubic Interest Litigations, Vishaka & Others Vs. State of Rajasthan & Sakshi Vs. Union of India which informed several gender-based laws, including POSH (Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace, Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal Act 2013) and POCSO (Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences Act 2012, Amendment 2019). Following the formation of the laws, in order to address gender-based biases in interpretation of the laws by the Judiciary, Sakshi spearheaded the Asia Pacific Advisory Forum for Judicial Education on Gender Equality for the Judiciary of 5 countries of the Region; India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh & Sri Lanka. The Gender & Judges programme was eventually institutionalized and came to be recognized as a Best Practice Model by UNIFEM (UN Women). With a clear focus on attitudinal shifts for strengthening a culture of accountability, Sakshi’s service vertical, SBOX has implemented several Social Art led Campaigns, Communication for Development (C4D) / Social & Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) Initiatives to mainstream difficult conversations and build empathetic communities. Sakshi has been empaneled with Women’s Safety Accelerator Fund (WSAF) as its Knowledge Partner and one of its six implementing partners, to raise awareness on Safe and Empowering Workplaces in tea estates and capacity build the management, staff and Internal Committee to Identify, Address and Redress instances of Violence Against Women and Girls.
