About This Cause

Sakshi, founded in 1992, is a pioneering rights-based non-profit organisation based in India, dedicated to ending gender-based violence and promoting gender equality through law, education, and behaviour change. Sakshi played a pivotal role in shaping India’s gender justice landscape, having been the petitioner in two landmark cases: Vishaka vs. State of Rajasthan, which led to the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act (2013), and Sakshi vs. Union of India, which contributed to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO, 2012). Over three decades, Sakshi has advanced transformative justice through: Judicial education across five Asia-Pacific countries (a UN Women-recognized Best Practice Model) Nationwide capacity-building initiatives with youth, educators, and frontline workers Strategic MoUs with the Government of India to reach over 40 lakh college students and 10 crore rural households Arts-based and digital campaigns like #MakeHomeASafeSpace and #YesToPOSH Flagship programs like The Rakshin Project and The Kalgyani Project empower youth, women, and institutions to recognize, prevent, and respond to sexual violence, with a focus on survivor-centric and rights-based approaches. By integrating research, advocacy, storytelling, and social impact design, Sakshi has advanced its mission towards building accountable communities and sustainable systems of change.
