About This Cause
Vidya Bhawan (VB) is a dream about new relationships between education, society and humanity. The limits of that dream are defined not by India and Indians but by the possibilities of humanity. VB respects the linguistic and cultural practices and cognitive potential that students bring to schools and colleges and builds on this potential in collaboration with teachers, parents and society. Through creative exploration and reflection, VB hopes to shape students and staff who are responsible, pluralist global citizens, sensitive to the welfare of others and the environment. Established in 1931 by Dr. Mohan Sinha Mehta and his colleagues in Udaipur, VB drew inspiration from Gandhi, the scouting movement and the freedom movement, realising that we would need responsible citizens and visionary leaders. The ideas of democracy, equality and inclusion were essential components of this vision. In fact, the origin and growth of VB in the context of swaraj and reformation movements subsumed not just freedom from colonial rule but also from colonial mentality. Today VB is a group of 10 educational institutions directly serving over 4000 students and indirectly serving several tens of thousands more, and over 550 staff members. These institutions include multiple Schools (the oldest, Senior Secondary School; the Basic School dedicated to the rural population; and the Public School), an Education Resource Centre for developing and implementing schooling innovations, Teacher Education Colleges (the older Govindram Seksaria Teachers’ College and the newer Gandhian Institute of Educational Studies), a Polytechnic, a post graduate level Rural Institute, a Krishi Vigyan Kendra for connecting farmers with science and innovation, and a Prakriti Sadhana Kendra to ecological conservation and study. On the one hand it thus has teacher training institutions and on the other students pursuing their education from nursery to doctoral levels. This unique mix of institutions gives VB an opportunity to internally learn and share this knowledge with the education sector at the national and international level. And at each one of these institutions, sports, music, dance and other activities constitute an integral part of the curriculum. The reach is wide and we focus on students, farmers, farm women, etc from disadvantaged backgrounds. From the beginning, Vidya Bhawan was set up to provide quality education not only for economic livelihoods but more importantly, for values of responsible citizenship.
