Our story so far: HEAL UK, now in its 28th year, was established in 1992 by Dr Satya Prasad Koneru, a UK-based family doctor originally from Vijayawada in India. It began with the donation by Dr Prasad of his family home in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh to be a home for young orphaned children. This was the start of the Ankita Children’s Home and HEAL UK and Heal India charities. The HEAL family has grown over the years and is now represented in six countries. It could be best described as a small group of associated international charities each with its own board of directors committed to supporting the current key projects in India. Each charity operates independently for fundraising and other discretionary initiatives but with the common purpose and responsibility for the health, education and care of over 10,000 orphaned and severely disadvantaged children in India. For many of the children, this is their first experience of a stable and nurturing environment In 2012 HEAL UK funded the purchase of 25.5 acres of land in Thotopalli, Andrha Pradesh with the vision to build an eco-friendly children’s village that would be home to 1,000 orphaned and underprivileged children in what is still one of the poorest parts of India. The project included the construction of dormitories, school buildings, a health centre, care for the visually impaired, a vocational training centre, a partnership project to supply and fit artificial limbs and various laboratories. Eight acres is utilised for horticulture and growing vegetables. With careful planning and oversight from both Heal UK and Heal India trustees, PARADISE VILLAGE became a reality in the Summer of 2014. So far over £6.5m has been spent on the site, including the purchase of an additional 5 acres, provided from a combination of generous corporate and private donations and a variety of fundraising activities. Our key partner and donor in both the construction of Paradise Village and ongoing children sponsor is The Hans Foundation for which we are very grateful. Heal School at Paradise Village is now affiliated with CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) New Delhi. HEAL India, a charity recognised by the Indian Government registration No 138/1993 and also registered to receive foreign funding, (FCRA Licence No. 010190210) has the main responsibility for all aspects of administration and smooth running of Paradise Village and the 660 children who currently live there, Guntur Children's Village that accommodates 200 children and all the remaining projects in India. It has a very experienced Board of Trustees that includes the founder Dr Satya Prasad Koneru. HEAL India president is Ramavtar Yadav, ex-Director General of Police for the state of Andhra Pradesh. He oversees the charity that already manages and maintains a number of projects in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, providing education and health care for orphaned and underprivileged children, including support for existing educational institutions. All of the trustees are involved with HEAL India on a voluntary basis so that all revenue can be used for looking after as many children as possible. We welcome any donations, large or small, regular sponsors, one-off lifetime sponsors or meal sponsors to support our current running costs. We have the opportunity to increase significantly the number of children we look after both on a residential basis and through our poverty trap education programme, limited only by prudent management of budget and income. We would be delighted to discuss or expand on any aspects of this document with potential sponsors/donors.
