About This Cause
DETAILS OF WORK DONE BY THE INSTITUTION INCLUDING PLACE AND THE NUMBER OF DISABLED PERSONS COVERED BY THE INSTITUTION 1. PALAVI EARLY INTERVENTION CENTER (PEIC): (Registration No. B-0063), Age group 0 to 6 years. Number of beneficiaries: 26 To enhance capacity and quality of early intervention services in rural areas of Raigad district, we started early intervention center in Pen. The center provides early intervention services to developmentally delays infants and toddlers. This project started in 2017-18. At present the strength of students in PEIC is 26. It is a ‘first’ and the ‘Only’ early intervention center in entire Pen. The center has special services for infants and toddlers who are at risk of developmental delays. These services are designed to identify and meet children’s needs in five developmental areas. These are physical, cognitive, communication, social or emotional development, sensory and adaptive development. Early intervention includes provision of services to such children and their families for the purpose of lessening the effects of the condition. Early intervention can be remedial or preventive in nature remediating the existing developmental problems or preventing their occurrence. If provided with early intervention care in the pre-schooling stage many of these children can be integrated in inclusive education environment and remaining in special schools. Besides it enables the children with development delays and severe disability to become independent in their activities of daily living by maintaining communication with their care givers. Therefore, early intervention & care is a critical requirement for every developmentally delayed child. In entire Raigad district there are 15 talukas, out of which only Panvel taluka has facility of EIC, in rest of the 14 Talukas of Raigad district there is not a single EIC, therefore rate of awareness regarding disability among people in villages is very low. This population always affects by poor sanitation, lack of clean and safe drinking water, poor prenatal and antenatal care. There is lack of proper medical care and total absence of early intervention and therapeutic care for children with delayed milestones. Need of such EICs in each taluka of Raigad district is too high. After knowing all these difficulties, the institution took steps forward and started the Palavi Early Intervention Center in Pen taluka and now developmentally delayed babies come from remote areas and talukas of Raigad district. THE KEY ACTIVITIES UNDER PEIC: 1. Early intervention support to children with developmental delays or disability, by using trans-disciplinary therapists who provide Occupational therapy, Physiotherapy, Behavioural therapy, Group therapy and social development support. 2. Speech, language and audiometric therapy for at risk babies. This need has been worked out based on assessment of individual cases. 3. Specialist therapy for children with Autism/ ADHD syndrome for sensory motor coordination. 4. Training of parents and volunteers/ community workers on Home based programs. Those who cannot bring their children to centres due to loss of daily wages or distance/ transportation issues. 5. Carrying out awareness workshops for Anganwadi, ASHA, Social workers at least once in a month. 6. Undertaking home visits in the rural areas to sensitize families and neighbourhood for social development of children with special needs. 2. LIGHT HOUSE SPECIAL TEACHERS TRAINING CENTER (LHSTTC): (Registration No. 7339) Number of beneficiaries: In the entire Raigad district, there is no other Special Teacher Training Center in the field of Intellectual Disability (ID). Being rural and tribal area, there was no awareness regarding ID. To make people aware about ID, its facilities, special services, as their special needs, their rehabilitation, special training center for ID was an important need and an intense requirement for Raigad district. After completion of H.S.C. education if anybody wanted to take up course in special education, they had to go all the way to Mumbai or Navi Mumbai, which was a very costly and hectic affair for them, so people were avoiding and ignoring such courses in this field. After knowing all these difficulties, the institution took steps forward and started a Special Teacher’s Training Centre for D.Ed. Special Education (ID), which is recognized by Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), New Delhi affiliated to National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD). It is the ‘first’ and the ‘Only’ special teacher’s training center in entire Raigad district, named as ‘Light House Special Teacher’s Training Center’, where students from all over India can take admissions. Since last four years, RCI, New Delhi in collaboration with Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU), Nasik started a Distance B.Ed. in Special Education (ID) and out of 5 Centers in Maharashtra they selected our center. This year we are having our 4th batch and totally we have 110 B.Ed. teacher trainees in our center.
