The growth of the organisation was gradual and consistent. Building stakeholdership among the beneficiaries has always remained the prime objective of the organisation. Over the period of four decades Sabuj Sangha has worked and gained commendable experience in various sectors that help in eradicating poverty. Instead of charity, the organization with an integrated approach of improving living standards has focused on the basic essential need areas that help eradication of poverty, build stakeholdership among community, both individually and institutionally, and pave pathway for a dignified life. At present, based on the principles of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) our organisation ‘Sabuj Sangha’ is striving and expanding its area of works in order to ensure the goals and objectives of sustainable development. Health and Nutrition: Over the past two decades we embarked upon in the field of Community Health with an objective to reach out the un-accessed, unserved sections of the community in remote locations of our operational areas in Sunderbans and Himalayan Alipurduar district. As part of our Community Health Programme we have built our own ‘Rural Health and Training Centre’ (RHTC) at our headquarters in Nandakumarpur village of Mathurapur II Block of South 24 Parganas District with an intention to make institutional health support accessible to the people of remote corners in Sunderbans. Now over the period of time we could establish trust among the neighbouring villages and beyond in availing Institutional Health facility through the ‘RHTC’. Besides our robust team of health workers that is involved 24x7 go to the cross section of people for a consistent mobilisation in propagating health awareness. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) The community in our operational areas at South 24 Parganas & Alipurduar districts of West Bengal are being consistently persuaded on best practices on health and hygiene. Schools, Households, and the larger Community are all brought under the purview of ‘Sabuj Sangha’ initiatives in this regard. Our WASH programmes include o Exclusive awareness and training for adolescent girls o Creation of School Sanitary Blocks o Installation of Individual Household Toilets o Installation of Safe Water Tube Wells Education and Protection: o ‘Sabuj Sangha’ has established a co-educational model school (presently up to Class VIII) at Nandakumarpur village in Sunderbans- ‘Kishalaya Sishu Siksha Niketan’ (KSSN), (Govt. recognized un-aided). o Residential school at Nandakumarpur village of South 24 Parganas district for children driven to earning and becoming child labour due to poverty and lack of opportunities. o Rehabilitation of deprived children through education (RDCE) in urban slums along railway tracks o Nabadiganta (Remedial) Project with marginalised tribal groups in remote areas of Alipurduar o Childline - toll free 24 hours helpline for distressed children o ‘Nayantara’ project with adolescent girls for their education & empowerment Environment, Climate Justice and Disaster Response: The project areas Sunderbans in the North & South 24 Parganas and Himalayan Dooars region close to forest areas in Alipurduar district are enriched with natural resources of flora and fauna. These areas contribute substantially to the natural eco-system of the project regions. But at the same time these areas are exposed to the risk of natural calamities. At present, the organisation is leading the West Bengal Chapter for a National Mobilisation Programme on ‘Climate Literacy and Marine Litter Management’ to address issues of indiscriminate litter management in the coastal and ecologically decisive areas of deeper Sunderbans at the confluence of many rivers including the holy river ‘Ganga’ and Sea- Bay of Bengal. Also as part of the programme, Sabuj Sangha has initiated efforts on arresting soil corrosions at different vulnerable points of coastal West Bengal by plantation of Mangrove and alike faunal species. Livelihood and Women’s Empowerment Ensuring livelihood support and self reliance through empowerment of the weaker section of the community, more specifically the women, has always remained an area of focus for Sabuj Sangha’s initiatives.
