The dream of a healthy society The proud IT capital, the abode of hundreds of High-Net worth Individuals, the knowledge destination of thousands of foreign students… Yes… It is the same Pune city… That is ashamed of not ensuring 'health' of its children. Scores of children are not sure of getting vaccinated. Thousands of children suffer from common diseases. The Story of Niramay Persons of repute, professionals, and leading businessmen from Pune – inspired by the dictum of ‘Seva Paramo Dharmaha’ embarked on an ambitious project to provide health services and medication to over 10,000 children from the 150-odd slums and shanties of Pune. This flagship project of ‘Niramay’ is titled the ‘Child Health Card Scheme’. As parents, we care… We – as the parents with all capacities to ensure the best pediatric care for our children – are concerned about similar needs of every child in Pune. The children living without proper vaccination and health awareness runs in tens of thousands in Pune. Considering this, Niramay is a modest effort. Child Health Card Scheme • Children in the -1 (Expecting mothers) to 6 years age group from slums are selected. • Each is given a health card. • Health card carries a detailed program of periodic checkups, vaccinations, advice on diet & sanitation. • 3 pediatric mobile dispensaries are equipped with a team each of qualified doctors and health assistants, medical equipment’s, medicines, etc. • These dispensaries visit each slum as per a pre-set program and carries out the checkups / vaccinations. • A special drive has been undertaken for the administering “Rubella” vaccine to girls in the age-group to 11-18 which will aid in avoiding complications in their pregnancies in years to come. 30000+ girls in that age-group have been immunized till date. • Our experts make the parents aware about nutrition, mental and physical health needs of the child. • We also carry out counseling for the same. • A help-line number for emergencies is on the cards. Highlights • The project was launched on the Raksha Bandhan day (28th August) of 2007 and till date Niramay has enrolled 73,000+ children from 135+ slums & 22 construction sites in Pune & we have administered follow-up doses to more than 65000 children along with new registration. The vaccination service is provided absolutely free off charge to all the beneficiaries apart from caste, class, religion. • We are glad to inform that till date we have administered more than 300000 doses to the children from slum. • Niramay has created synergy by tuning in with the Pune Municipal Corporation and the State Government’s Anganwadi project under the Integrated Child Development Scheme. • Niramay works on 22 construction sites immunizing children of construction labour who are in an even dilapidated state. • Niramay is playing a major role in the war against Polio. Since the year 2008 Niramay has participated in all the 18 Pulse-Polio vaccination days and have administered more than 33740 doses. • B. D. Karve Research & Consultancy Cell of the internationally reputed Karve Institute of Social Service conducted an efficiency audit of the Trust in 2009. It has concluded “The overall findings of the study suggest that the work of Niramay has been found to be very positive and commendable. Its work has been appreciated by the CDPOs, Anganwadi Workers and the community people alike. Their efforts in reaching the areas that PMC or other organizations have not been able to reach are well appreciated. The functioning pattern of the organization has been found to be satisfactory. All welcomes its vision of expanding its activities to conducting the health awareness programme”. It finally recommended “Pune Municipal Corporation must encourage more of such public –private partnerships in order to reach the expanding city better”. Rubella Vaccination: A special drive of our project ‘Rubella Free Pune City’ was carried out by Niramay with the help of Rotary Club of Pune. From 2013 to Aug. 2018 we have administered free of charge rubella vaccine to more than 33000 girls from the slums of Pune city. Rubella is commonly known as German Measles caused by rubella virus. Infection of the mother by rubella virus during pregnancy can be serious, it entails a range of serious incurable illnesses. If the baby survives, it can be born with severe heart disorders, blindness, deafness or other life-threatening organ disorders. Kishori Shakti Project Women will work out their destinies — much better, too, than men can ever do for them – Swami Vivekanand In order to look after and raise health awareness among adolescent girls forced into early marriage and motherhood by their parents’ poverty and illiteracy, Niramay runs day care centres for such girls and counsels them. While ensuring that girls do not get married before the age of 18, the programme also supports their education by providing school kits, curricular and career guidance, vocational training, and life skills training in areas ranging from leadership, motivation, value education, and entrepreneurship development, to positive behaviour, healthcare, cleanliness and hygienic habits. A dedicated Kishori Shakti Sanghatika (community coordinator) is assigned to each centre. A total of 20 Kishori Shakti centres are conducted in 20 different slums in Pune benefitting more than 3500 girls. All the activities and programmes are organized free off charge to all the beneficiaries of kishori Shakti Projects Health Awareness Programs As part of this program, Niramay conducts health and hygiene awareness activities in the slums on a variety of topics: healthy dietary and sanitation habits; faiths and beliefs; common diseases and their prevention and cures; vaccination; menarche and premenstrual syndromes, and others. Fight against Anemia To address the worrying problem of anemia primarily caused due to malnutrition among the city’s slum children, Niramay has carried out a study to identify the root cause of the issue. It has carried out haemogram check-ups in two of the city’s large slums for all boys aged 1-6 years and girls aged 1-16 years. Based on expert analysis of the findings, Niramay has undertaken specialized orientation, counseling, corrective and preventive measures for parents and children free off charge. Training of Anganwadi Sevikas Niramay conducts training programmes for Anganwadi workers of ICDS to enable them to perform more effectively. More than 800 workers have benefited from this training to date. Nevertheless all facilities are provided free of cost.
