About This Cause

A BRIEF INTRODUCTION & ACTIVITIES OF TIBETAN CHILDREN’S HOME (TCH) Background: Tibetan Children’s Home (TCH) is a Charitable Society, which is registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. Our office is located in the Tibetan Colony, Clement Town, Dehra Dun, Uttarakhand, India. The First Education and Social Benefitting Activity: TCH’s first charitable activity is to build a hostel for the poorest of poor children for their sound development. In TCH we foster these children’s mental and physical health by providing healthy and nutritious food in a safe environment conducive to their early education. We provide basic primary schooling and offer cultural education so that their own native culture is not lost. Inauguration of the hostel: This hostel was graciously inaugurated by His Eminence DG Khochhen Rinpoche, President of Tibetan Colony along with Mr. Lobsang Thardoe the former Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Dehra Dun. Visit Highlights: TCH has been visited and blessed by several imminent Rinpoche and dignitaries and the highlight of all such visits is the visit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. While expressing His appreciation for our work and efforts, His Holiness wrote in the visitors’ book: “We greatly appreciate this self-initiative in genuinely serving one’s people with ideals of preserving one’s culture and language through education, thank you. Do strive with continued sincerity and diligence, to teachers, staff, students and to all my sincere protection and prayers.” Opening of a Primary School: TCH stands for compassion in action and the main focus of our activity is providing education opportunity along with necessary facilities for the poorest of poor and deserving children. Therefore in order to enhance our services for those needy children in the field of education TCH opened Chenrezig Primary School (CPS) on the 3rd April 2014. With English as the medium of instruction and Hindi and Tibetan as an optional second language, CPS is State Government of Uttarakhand recognized school and follows the CBSE board syllabus. Summary of Activities of TCH Society: Since the inception of (Chenrezig Primary School) CPS, TCH caters one hundred percent free education to thirty destitute kids belonging to Tibetan, Arunachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Bihar, and Nepal. Hundred percent free education means free board and lodge, free school tuition fees, free uniforms, and other clothing and all other incidental expenses like medical, textbooks, stationeries and pocket expenses. Among these thirty children, TCH Society sends 13 Arunachal kids to Hilton’s Public School, an Indian undertaking high school fee, after graduating from grade V from our school. The TCH pays for their tuition and bus fare until they reach graduate high school. Food (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner): At the 80th birthday His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, TCH decided to go vegetarian. Although “T” in TCH stands for Tibetan, yet our motive is to serve all children of all color, nationality, caste, and creed. Dance and Music: Since our school is a multi-culture, we provide opportunities for all to promote different cultures. In this regard, TCH conducts cultural performances for children twice in a year. These performances are well received by parents and local people as well. Our children have performed outside places also likeMax Hospital Dehra Dun and Dekyiling Tibetan Colony, Sahastradhara to name a couple. Our children are quite popular in Dehra Dun. Extra Co-curriculum Activities For children’s physical and mental development we organize short excursions and games like soccer and basketball tournaments. Our children participate in other tournaments too which are organized by others. In this way children enhance their exposure and develop skills for civic and social relationships. l Roster: TCH has sixty-seven children belonging to various ethnicities and nationalities mainly Indian children coming from the Himalaya, Bihar and Nepal and a small number of Tibetan children. Such a congregation of children from diverse social, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds does have their unique challenges yet our society is dedicated to serving such a group of children with compassion and loving-kindness. Human Resource: TCH hostel staff and school faculty members comprise one Director, one office secretary, one part-time accountant, one hostel warden, two childcare takers, one storekeeper, two cooks and nine trained teachers including one Head Teacher and one assistant teacher. Despite low salaries, TCH staff members work with dedication to children’s education and their sound development. We also hire four tutors for supervising children’s morning and evening studies. These tutors extend help to individual children as and when necessary. Retrospection: TCH has touched lives of over four hundred needy children who have come to us from various remote corners of Himalayan regions including Nepalis and Tibetans to date. They are settled and doing well today in various walks of life and raising their own families; some are working in nursing homes, hospitals, tourism, hotel management, aviation; some are even self-employed and run small business ventures. Some of our students went on to earn degrees in tourism and MBA degrees. Vision: Human life is precious and all children are equal. Without discrimination, we serve all those who are need of help- Indian, Tibetan or Nepali. Dedication & Future: We shall work diligently in order to provide quality education to children with a sound grounding in their native languages and culture with English as the medium of instruction. We have earned the goodwill of the people around us through our dedication and hard work. We have changed the lives of the children under our care and have dramatically improved i.e. in discipline, education and co-curricular activities. For that reason, a long waiting list is there eagerly looking forward to their admission into the hostel and school. Due to financial constraints we cannot, we are unable to fulfill their dream. However, TCH is hopeful that we can raise funds through a friend of TCH from aboard: USA, Canada, Australia, and Europe. Urgent needs: 1. a) Leaking dining hall roof: To stop leaking permanently from the roof, the roof is thatched with another tin roof which is the common practice in our town.
