Mission Statement

NOT A TALE, BUT A TRUTH Arjun (name changed) joined Anandalok as a violent, having deficits in intellectual ability. His fits of bad temper had no apparent reasons and were difficult to analyze. One day a guest had come visiting the Institute and was sitting in the dining hall where he was offered a glass of water. Arjun came into the room and pounced on the glass of water on the table and smashed it against the wall. When asked as to why he misbehaved, Arjun who was calm now replied that he was angry. A few days later, the home engaged an art teacher to teach painting to the residents. Some of them including Arjun surprised everybody by their unique sense of color and its use. Arjun took liking to the painting and it was found that he had amazing coloring sense. As days past, Arjun’s liking for painting increased with his simultaneous decrease in his violent temperament. Today, his fits of anger and violence are a thing of the past. The members of this Centre, for the last thirty years, are trying to serve some of those unfortunate members of our society, who are suffering from Intellectual Disability. Our endeavour is to provide accommodation, give vocational guidance, medical treatment, guardian counseling and to strive for their overall betterment as human being. The Centre, which is a nonprofit, non-government organisation, besides undertaking many activities for the cause and welfare as above, also runs a hostel, ANANDALOK, for adult mentally challenged persons, on a 2.14 acres land at 47, Kathore Road, Kolkata 700 128, in a lush green ambience which is situated in the midst of mango, lichi, cocoanut and other fruit bearing trees and has been gifted by a kind hearted organisation namely Mahajeevan Sadhan Sangh of 72, Masjid Bari Street, Kolkata – 700 006

About This Cause

OUR STORY The hostel was started on 7th January 1990 in Bhadreshwar in Hooghly district. It moved to the present premises on 14th February 1992. An old one storied building, which was on the land, was renovated and seven male residents moved into the new environment. During the early years, many well-wishers helped us with funds to sustain the services. Soon we started getting urgent appeals to increase the services. These appeals were from families who were unable to cope up with their children or siblings and needed facilities where they could get good care and attention for their wards. There was also a compelling requirement to start a female section. The German Government came forward and helped us with funds for the construction of the female wing. At present ANADALOK hosts 29 hostellers (6 females and 23 males) in a dormitory type accommodation. Though the accommodation is mediocre, it is amply made up by good care and nutritious food, most of which comes from products grown on the land, and healthy environment is available to the residents. OUR ACTIVITIES They are receiving training in, • Behavioural improvement and development • Cooking • Reading writing & drawing • Music & dance • Knitting • Candle making • Book & Exercise book binding • Sports • Activities of daily living • Vocational training OUR OTHER ACTIVITIES We are registered under the National Trust, Government of India. Under this banner, we have been involved in the following activities: • Identification of persons with intellectual deficits with the help of professional people • Helping them in appearing before Medical Board as designated by the local administration • Helping them to get Disability certificates from the office of the District Magistrate • Helping in the process of awarding Guardianship for the disabled persons • Conducting workshops on mental health awareness • Networking with various other organizations dealing with the handicapped persons • Healthy Kitchen Garden. • Utilization of Renewable Energy Sources in order to gradually replace conventional energy, wherever possible • To cultivate vegetables and fruits using organic manure and natural pesticides in order to promote chemical free cultivation OUR AIM The aim of the institute is to help people with intellectual deficits to develop their potential to the fullest and their families a little help in dealing with them. ANANDALOK’s aim is to help them by: • Categorizing the residents into three groups namely Adult, Young and Children • Providing a comfortable, green, pollution free and healthy environment for them • Maintaining their physical and mental health • By imparting training to facilitate good work habits, teach vocational skills and help in modifying their behavior • Guardian counseling • Rehabilitating them to the mainstream of the society OUR FUTURE PLANS We have plans for various expansion programs including cultivation, producing dairy products, poultry etc. the Development Research Communication and Service Centre, an NGO working in the field of sustainable management of natural resources, have helped us to start eco friendly cultivation with organic manure. Our residents are reaping the benefits by consuming the products. It is also helping some of the residents to learn skills that might help them to be economically rehabilitated to some extent. In keeping with the need of the more families who need help and support, we have partially constructed a building which on completion will increase our accommodation to 45 male residents who will be able to use the facilities for long-term residential and short-term respite care. We would like to reach the disabled persons who have minimum or no resources to sustain themselves. We are planning for a sheltered workshop where disabled people will come and participate in production and also formation of Self Help group with disabled persons to give them livelihood support to live a life of self-respect. OUR NEEDS Our foremost need is to increase our corpus so that we can continue to provide subsidized but quality service to the people who can either stay in our hostel, or take our respite facilities and who come for the day care centre. For this purpose, we are: • Hiring professional care giving staff • Setting up a physiotherapy unit • Collecting funds to upgrade the residential facilities • Buying equipments for training • Raising funds to start a dairy • To provide our services free of cost to those special individuals who are not able to afford due to poverty, whom presently we have to reluctantly turn down due to paucity of funds. • We also require funds for infrastructure development, completion of the building and expanding the day care unit, lighting the entire premises, upgrading interior roads etc. We have much more needs. Only a few are recorded above. The more we grow more the needs will be indentified. We look forward to your goodwill and support to help us in our endeavor to continue giving quality services to the persons with disability. We are trying hard for smooth running of the centre so that the residents, who are not very sound in mind, cannot wander away. Unfortunately, the boarders who are mentally handicapped are a burden to their families and as such, in many cases they are not looked after well. With the parents getting aged and not being able to cope up with the present active life, these mentally challenged persons at times become liability to the families or society. A HOSTEL away from Home for them, will, perhaps relieve many of the depressed families of their mental agony. Unfortunately, the boarders who are mentally challenged are a burden to their families and as such, in many cases they are not looked after well and your large hearted contribution will fulfill our dream to a very great extent and help our humble effort to at least raise conviction among the guardians who are laden with misfortune. • We are registered under West Bengal Societies Registration Act XXVI of 1961, No- SO061096 of 1988-89 • All contribution to the organisation is exempted under rule 80G of Income Tax Act 1961 • We are entitled to receive Foreign Contribution under F.C.R.A. • All remittance is drawn in the favor of “Welfare Centre for the Mentally Handicapped”.
