Mission Statement

To engage and empower the weaker sections of society through our projects and make them self-reliant.

About This Cause

Adharshila is a registered trust under the Indian Trust Act 1882, founded in 2004 by Neena Jolly and Geeta Arora to improve education, health, and livelihood outcomes for low-income communities living in slums, urban and semi-urban villages in Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR), India. Our mission is to engage and empower the weaker sections of society through our projects and teach them to be self-reliant. Over the last 16 years, we have worked with over 2,48,160 beneficiaries from different migrant communities and have been able to make a significant impact through our skill development certificate programs, education programs and healthcare clinics. Our aims include: 1) Skilling women and youth from low-income communities so they may seek employment and gain financial independence and provide them support and mentorship as they step outside their comfort zones to pursue their individual journeys 2) Improving literacy outcomes for women, youth, and children 3) Expanding the outreach of a migrant-sensitive health system by setting up easy to reach primary health care centers. 4) Contribute towards UN Sustainable Development Goals: --SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being --SDG 5: Gender Equality --SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth --SDG 10: Reduced Inequality The aims are fulfilled through the following programs: 1) ADHARSHILA’S FAMILY HEALTH CENTER Adharshila’s family health center aims at improving overall health outcomes by treating urban and semi-urban low-income families, expanding outreach of health services through mobile support services, and promoting preventive health care by increasing awareness of osteoporosis, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, anemia, methods of family planning and birth spacing, sexual and reproductive health, menstruation, and by forming support groups for families of alcoholics and educating them on alcoholism as a disease. In-person doctor consultations are provided to patients in family medicine, ophthalmology, gynecology, dermatology, and homeopathy in lieu of a small token fee. Prescribed medications are given free of cost. Radiology and pathology tests are provided at nominal costs. 2) EDUCATION WITH ACTIVITY BASED LEARNING (ABL) Adharshila has devised its own curriculum on the ideologies of Rivertide's Activity Based Learning in a Multi Grade Multi Level (MGML) classroom structure. This methodology involves methods like experiential learning, situational learning, peer learning, and group activities. It has seen positive reactions from students as they look forward to their classroom learning. Attendance has drastically improved and parent involvement has also increased. After extensive brainstorming and trials of the ABL methodology, Adharshila has seen successful changes in its students. The education program supports and reinforces school learning. This way a student learns his lesson in a reassuring manner. 3) REMEDIAL CLASSES The project of “Remedial Classes” is very important as it is instrumental in determining whether or not students drop out of school. Being at an impressionable age, this extra help they receive through Adharshila’s remedial classes goes a long way in preventing them from discontinuing their education. At home, their parents are not educated and hence, are unable to provide them any guidance or support, so these students are given extra help in their studies. Along with coaching, regular monthly tests are conducted by the teachers to evaluate the progress of every individual child. Children are also taught to be conscious of their hygiene in their day-to-day life. In addition to general awareness, legal awareness, nutrition awareness, personality development workshops, eye check-ups, and dental check-ups are also conducted to provide medication, spectacles, and preventive care, respectively. 4) NON-FORMAL EDUCATION This program helps women & children from unreached communities who have never been to any educational institution. Irrespective of their age, they are encouraged to be functionally literate and enroll in open schools. Step by step, they are able to take class 5 and class 8 examinations. Some of them also enroll in class 10 through this program. 5) COMPUTER EDUCATION PROGRAM (DIGITAL SKILLING) Computer Courses certified by the National Institute of Information Technology (NIIT) are implemented to train students in basic computer knowledge, advanced word and excel and CISCO's cybersecurity course along with an emphasis on English as a language and personality development to enhance employability. 6) ADHARSHILA - MASTERG APPAREL DESIGN & FABRICATION PROGRAM MasterG is an innovative one-year fashion design skill development training and certification program implemented at Fena-Adharshila-MasterG Apparel Design and Fabrication Program by fashion designer Gayatri Jolly. This program helps train women from marginalized and migrant communities in India. At MasterG, they learn skills that can help them get remunerative work in the garment industry. It helps them become self-reliant, earn fair wages, and fight for their rights as garment workers in an industry that is informal and does not guarantee fair compensation. Adharshila's focus has always been improving well being of people. We are working on several areas which include improving child and maternal health through preventive and curative health checkups and camps, ending poverty and hunger by empowering people through our skill development and education programs in the community. Adharshila works at the grassroots level to make communities self-reliant. Our centers are located in the heart of slums and we provide support through our various programs, camps, and awareness sessions to the community. Our programs are designed and implemented after conducting need assessment in the communities and depend on active community participation.
