About This Cause

CARE India Medical Society is a Public Charitable Trust that has been working for cancer patients in Pune, Maharashtra, for the last three decades. The organisation provides comprehensive cancer treatment and palliative services, both at home and at its hospital, Vishranti, entirely free of charge to patients who cannot afford the high costs of cancer treatment. The core mission of CARE India is to offer comprehensive cancer care through a single-window system, making treatment accessible to underprivileged communities while sustaining these efforts through innovative strategies. All services provided by the organisation are designed with deep respect for the cultural and social fabric of Indian life, particularly the emphasis on family bonds. In India, families play a crucial role in caregiving, and CARE India’s programs are tailored to involve families in the patient's treatment and “end of life care” journey. Timeline at a glance: - 1994: Launched Satseva, India's first home care program offering end-of-life care specifically for cancer patients. - 1998: Introduced Matruseva, a health maintenance program designed to screen for and detect cancers that are prevalent in women. - 2007: Established Vishranti, a 22-bed hospital providing 24/7 care for home care patients with severe or difficult-to-manage symptoms. - 2013: Launched Cantreat, a program dedicated to providing free chemotherapy at Vishranti, along with support for free surgery and radiation therapy. Primary Aim: The primary goal of Satseva is to enhance the quality of life for underprivileged patients suffering from advanced-stage cancer, particularly those who have been deemed "treatment failures" by the medical system and left with little hope. Key features: - A dedicated team of a doctor, nurse, and social worker visits cancer patients at home - Patient’s needs are carefully assessed with a focus on pain management & symptom relief - Families are trained to take care of their loved ones at home, creating a cost-effective and familiar environment - Regular follow-up visits are made to ensure complete care & ongoing treatment - Families are counselled to address physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects of care Through this compassionate approach, Satseva strives to keep patients pain-free, providing comfort and dignity in their final days. Vishranti - Free Hospital Care For Cancer Patients (Established in 2007) Vishranti is a 22-bed Critical Cancer Palliative Care Centre dedicated to providing 24x7 hospital care for terminal cancer patients. It was established in response to the pressing needs of individuals enrolled in the Satseva home care program, many of whom faced severe symptoms necessitating medical management in a hospital environment. Primary Aim: The primary goal of Vishranti is to deliver inpatient care that significantly enhances the quality of life for home care patients and their families, who often find it challenging to manage complex medical needs at home. Key features: Hospital provides a comprehensive range of services, including - Pain relief administration - Minor procedures and bypass surgeries to alleviate pain caused by obstructions - Palliative chemotherapy and, in select cases, outsourced radiation therapy - After discharge, patients continue to receive support through Satseva's home care services - All hospital services—including admission, medication, investigations, nursing, and supportive care are provided completely free of cost. Vishranti uniquely complements the Satseva Home Care Program, ensuring that patients in their final stages of life receive comprehensive and compassionate care tailored to their needs. Cantreat - Comprehensive Cancer Treatment (started in 2013) Launched in 2013 with five beds, Cantreat provides free chemotherapy to underprivileged cancer patients. In 2019, a state-of-the-art Day Care Center was established to expand these services. The program primarily serves women with breast, cervical, and ovarian cancers, as well as a few head and neck cancer cases in both men and women. Primary Aim: Cantreat's goal is to offer comprehensive cancer treatment to patients who cannot afford expensive care. Unique features: - Free chemotherapy for men and women with specific cancers. - Subsidised radiation therapy outsourced to local Radiation Oncology Centers, covered by the organisation. - Free surgeries organised through government hospitals and schemes. - Free diagnostic support, including PET scans, IHC, and biopsies, which are typically unaffordable for poor patients. - Emotional and psychological support through counselling. - Free periodic review by oncologists.
