Its grass root level initiatives have helped the Organization to reach out and impact the lives of over 200000 people living in the slums of Delhi. The Organization runs its core activities through its three Centres located in east district of Delhi. In addition it has adopted an identified outreach area covering 10000 underprivileged families living in urban slums and unauthorized colonies in the targeted area.

About This Cause

Amba Foundation traces its modest beginnings to an initiative to educate a handful of eager children in a neighborhood slum cluster. Later, it extended its commitment to the community at large, through provision of primary health-care. Today, it has an established non-formal education program, multiple skill training programs for employability of youth and women, self-help micro savings groups for women, awareness programs and facilitating access to government welfare schemes under its banner. The Organization runs its core activities through its three Centers located in East district of Delhi. In addition, it has adopted an identified outreach area covering 10000 underprivileged families living in urban slums and unauthorized colonies in the targeted area. This growth has been fueled by the perseverance of a dedicated worker, community and volunteer base. As a result of their efforts, Amba Foundation has been able to realize its dream of strengthening a sense of voluntary service to society. And true to its name, Amba has won the distinction of a metaphorical Mother, who nurtures her children with all her dedication, so they can take wings and fly to higher skies. The Organization rests on the foundation of volunteerism, participative development and secularism. Under its non formal education program it provides basic education and educational support to children in the age group of 5 to 15 years of age. The children benefiting under this program are school and non-school going and also school drop outs. Focus is to integrate these children into mainstream education and improve school retention levels. To make the process of learning joyful and fun, dance, drama, art & craft workshops are made an integral part of the learning process. Over 5000 children have benefitted from this program. Past experience at the community level has shown that the profile of the youth in urban slums is not uniform but multi layered. While on one hand there are first generation high school educated youth while at another level there are youth particularly girls who dropped out of school either due to migration or to look after their siblings. To meet the skill training and employability needs of this mixed profile Amba Foundation provides training in cutting and tailoring and beauty parlour management to young girls and women and training in basic and advance computer applications, spoken English, soft skills and retail marketing to high school educated youth to enable them to find entry level jobs. The Organization has a well-established womens self help savings groups where groups of women form micro savings groups to create a pool for taking loans in times of need for children’s education, illness, marriage or repair of their hutment. The women also take loans to start their own enterprise to earn a living. Over 400 women are members of these savings groups with bank accounts doing active inter loaning among themselves. Awareness and empowerment go hand in hand. The organization conducts regular legal awareness and counselling sessions with special focus on women to educate them on various laws to safeguard them against abuse and violence. Safety audits are conducted in the target areas and community participation efforts are made to make public areas safe for women. Awareness workshops are conducted on menstrual health and hygiene and the need for proper nutrition for girls. Health Camps and primary clinics are conducted on a regular basis to provide healthcare and disease awareness to the community at large.
