About This Cause

Christel House schools impact the lives of impoverished children utilizing the best research-based practices with a focus on holistic human development. They offer students a pathway to become contributing members of society and change the lives of generations to come. Our Approach: Christel House focuses on the ‘whole child’, addressing the root causes of poverty through a holistic human development model. We don’t just educate, or feed, or provide health care—we do all of these things—from early childhood through early adulthood. Our Schools: Christel House India was established in Bangalore in 2001. Beginning with a fairly good number of 320 students, today it is around 862 students strong from KG to Grade 12. The medium of instruction is English, and there is a strong emphasis on Experiential Learning, develop ing higher-order thinking skills, technology integration and character development. Christel House India is a secular school. All the children who come to Christel House are from urban slums and shelters. Our admission process ensures that we admit the most deserving of these communities. The main criterion for admission to Christel House is not evidence of talent – but evidence of poverty, one measure of which is a maximum income of Rs. 2,400 per household member per month. Christel House India launched its new school in Nava Raipur, Atal Nagar, Chhattisgarh, on 16th August 2016, with 210 students from Kindergarten to Grade 2. Currently, the school has 419 students from Kindergarten to grade 5. The school will add 70 students every year in KG until it reaches its full strength of 910 students from KG to Grade 12. The school currently caters to students from 16 impoverished villages in the Nava Raipur area. Our Model: Christel House employs a holistic model of education. It provides high-quality, high- impact education, nutrition, medical care, transportation, books, uniforms and stationery to all the students. Along with rigorous academics, students receive complete health services such as medical check-ups, vaccinations, follow-up treatments and hospitalization and mental health services as needed. Breakfast, lunch, milk and an evening snack, that follow nutritional guidelines, are provided daily to all students. These services contribute to student success, as it has been well-established by the research community that healthy and well-nourished young children are more likely to reach their fullest physical, cognitive and socio-emotional potential. All the above services provided to the students are completely free. A strong Character development program is enmeshed in all aspects of the schools, with the four core values of Respect, Responsibility, Independence and Integrity as the foundation. The school provides a safe, caring and nurturing atmosphere to all students thereby addressing the larger social problem of juvenile delinquency, prevalent in these communities. Moreover, student support does not end upon graduation. The College & Careers program involves screening students for specific skills and aptitude and assists them to join universities and vocational training options based on their academic interests and capabilities. All graduates receive Scholarships and academic support to pursue their university education and finally, job placements under the Christel House College & Careers Program. The school stresses on parental involvement and support to the academic and behavioural successes of their kids in school. This is achieved through our robust community outreach programs. Our Outcomes: Christel House graduates have the dignity, comportment, values, skills and abilities to make a positive contribution to society. Our students stay in school, graduate, continue their studies through university and gain employment. Our commitment to students is often 18 years or more—from kindergarten to securing jobs. Our model creates a ‘multiplier effect,’ as once the cycle of poverty is broken, future generations benefit. Unlike most charities, our structure ensures that 100% of donations will fund programs and services, directly benefiting the children of Christel House and will not be used for Administrative & Fundraising overhead expenses. Administrative & Fundraising overhead expenses are paid by the founder Christel DeHaan in perpetuity. High measures of accountability, complete transparency, audited financials and rigorous business practices define Christel House as a charity. Christel House Bangalore graduates are now working in companies like Northern Trust Bank, IBM, Cognizant, DELL, Infosys, Deutsche Bank, EY, Hewlett Packard, Accenture, Mphasis, Transguard Group (Dubai), Amazon, Tech Mahindra, Quess Corps, Omega, ANZ, Transferwise, HSBC, Gallagher Operations, Government of Karnataka, Via.com, TCS, KPMG, Grant Thornton, MindTree Consultants, and many more. Christel House breaks the cycle of poverty. Recently, the education and CSR domain experts from global management consulting firm Deloitte conducted a sixteen-week-long study on the efficacy of Christel House India’s programs and services. The study validates the Christel House approach to sustainable transformation and breaking the cycle of poverty. According to the study, a student starting primary education in Christel House Bangalore is 8 times more likely to successfully complete the school-leaving (Class 12) examination and 19 times more likely to graduate from a tertiary education program as compared to a government school student. The study also examined other NGOs and government schools serving a similar demographic. At Christel House, we know that every child is equal. Which is why we believe that by creating opportunities we can help them live with dignity and contribute back to their society.
