Its programming in India umbrellas the "Vrindavan Ashram" where we dedicate efforts towards healing and support for abandoned elderly helping them live in an uplifted consciousness. Its foundation are the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda, writer of the spiritual classic ‘Autobiography of a Yogi‘. Ananda was founded in California in 1969 by Yogananda’s direct disciple, Swami Kriyananda. Through its classes, retreats, centres, communities and various outreach activities, Ananda serves as a spiritual oasis where truth-seekers can quench their spiritual thirst with Paramhansa Yogananda’s Self-Realization teachings and have Satsang (spiritual-friendship) in the company of like-minded souls.

About This Cause

What does Ananda do? Teach Meditation and Kriya Yoga: Meditation is one of the most natural and rewarding of all human activities. With meditation, one can experience inner peace, health, and spiritual awakening. Joy is within you, and meditation is the key to making that joy a permanent part of your life. Science now proves that even 12 minutes of daily meditation can increase the gray matter in our brain and provide numerous health benefits. Kriya Yoga is a meditation technique that quickly accelerates one’s spiritual growth. It was first made widely known by Paramhansa Yogananda in his Autobiography of a Yogi. Ananda Yoga is a yoga tradition based on the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda and developed by his disciple Swami Kriyananda. The goal of Ananda Yoga is to experience Ananda (Divine Joy) and to nourish the body, mind and soul. Satsang and Community: The establishment of world brotherhood communities was a long time dream of Yogananda. He spoke enthusiastically up until the very end of his life about this dream. In his Autobiography of a Yogi he exclaimed, “An urgent need on this war-torn earth is the founding, on a spiritual basis, of numerous world-brotherhood colonies”. (Note: These words were edited out in the late 1950s.) One of the aims and ideals of his organisation, while he was alive, was “to spread a spirit of world brotherhood among all peoples and to aid in the establishment, in many countries, of self-sustaining world brotherhood colonies for plain living and high thinking”. He spoke of this dream just a few months before his passing to a disciple, Kamala Silva. Ananda is the fulfillment of Yogananda’s dream of establishing world brotherhood colonies, where spiritual seekers could gather together and practise “plain living and high thinking”. These colonies were envisioned by Yogananda many years before the community movement began in America. During his lifetime, Yogananda tried to fulfill his dream, but the world at that time wasn’t ready for such an unusual approach to life. Healing Sangha Paramhansa Yogananda taught specific techniques for awakening the divine healing energy that flows within each individual. These techniques have been found to help overcome physical, mental and spiritual diseases including serious illnesses. Ananda India has a healing Sangha which includes Healing Prayer groups of 157 devotees and Kriyabans, ten of which are doctors. Healing sessions are offered after each Sunday Satsang at the Ananda Center by the Healing Prayers group of that particular center. We also regularly offer healing classes , workshops and healing retreats held by one or more of the 28 certified healing teachers trained on the teachings on healing of Paramhansa Yogananda all over India. You can find them on the calendars of the different centers. Ananda Sangha Healing Prayers Circle: The Healing Prayer Circle is blessed to pray for you and your loved ones. If you, or someone you care for, is experiencing a health challenge or difficult life situation, we can pray for them at a distance. You may submit prayer requests for physical, mental, or spiritual well-being. Your information will be kept confidential, except for the relevant parts shared with the Healing Prayer Council. We will keep your request for one month. Members of the Healing Council will pray for the person for that duration. If you perceive an improvement during this time, it may indicate receptivity to the healing energy. We recommend that you renew your request then to allow continued healing to take place. Education for Life: In a nutshell, Education For Life works directly with children’s energy. This focus on energy is at the core of Education For Life as described by Educaton For Life’s formulator, J. Donald Walters (Swami Kriyananda), in his book Education for Life. Education For Life can be said to attune the adult and child. This is a usually overlooked aspect of instructional success. It is what sets Education For Life apart from almost every other educational approach, even those that are, like Education For Life, also experiential, holistic, child-centred, and integrated. Underlying Education For Life are the ground-breaking principles and practices of Paramhansa Yogananda at his “how-to-live” school for boys, first in Dihika and then Ranchi. His school won wide acclaim even before he left for the West — the first Indian yoga master to actually reside there. Building on Yoganandaji’s work with just a few later “tweaks”, Education For Life has developed over four decades — branching out from the first primary school (1972) and the first high school (1997). There are also a quite a few teachers at other schools implementing Education For Life in their own classrooms. Spiritual Art and Music: Music and art have a great potential to uplift our consciousness and create inner and outer harmony in us. We offer workshops in various Ananda centers around India in which we explore music composed by Swami Kriyananda. Singing and listening to uplifting music is one of the greatest ways to increase our level of consciousness and inspiration. We also offer art workshops to open our hearts and express the inspiration we feel. Various art mediums such as paint, crayons, pastels, collage and color pencils are used to bring forth our child-like creativity. You do not need to have any prior art or music skills to attend these sessions, everyone is welcome! ” A work of art is not great merely because it is skillfully executed. It is great if its message inspires us, however subtly, toward calm, intuitive feeling, and if it helps us to recognize in that feeling at least a suggestion of our own highest, spiritual potential.” — Swami Kriyananda
