Mission Statement

We use innovative technology and public mobilisation to build an active movement of progressive Indians who take action to affect change that would not be possible if they acted alone, holding government, corporate, and cultural leaders accountable to our vision.

About This Cause

Our aim is to make democracy more accessible and participatory for all citizens. Our approach is focused on building movements by leveraging digital tools that enable citizens to voice their concerns, opinions, and ideas. We believe that citizen engagement in governance is key to creating positive change in society. Our platform provides citizens with the necessary resources and tools to make a difference. We work towards educating citizens about issues that affect their communities, and encourage them to take part in decision-making at all levels. We employ a range of strategies to achieve our goals, including petitions, public engagement, decision-maker engagement, building volunteer movements, media engagement, and citizen-generated research. We want to empower citizens to take an active role in shaping their communities and the nation. By working towards this goal, we believe that we can create a better future for all, across the country. Jhatkaa.org was founded in 2012, with a vision to shape an equitable, inclusive & sustainable India, driven by the democratic power of an engaged citizenry. We’re more than an organisation; we’re a force of grassroots citizen power employing, modifying, and adapting innovative end-to-end campaigning approaches to catalyse change! We address issues in a systematic manner, and therefore, our work traverses 3 broader yet interconnected themes - Climate change, Gender & Sexuality, and Socio-economic Justice. Since our inception, we’ve demanded justice for workers exposed to mercury poisoning in Kodaikanal, created an app for citizens to collaborate to end garbage burning in Bengaluru, and campaigned to preserve green and open spaces against unscientific development projects. We’ve rallied to save precious forests, supported sexual harassment whistleblowers to be reinstated at college through a multifaceted campaign (including a viral comic!) & ensured doctors' stipends were released due to sustained pressure on authorities in Karnataka during the Covid-19 crisis! That’s not all - We supported several volunteers and ASHA workers during COVID-19, and our successful advocacy for an integrated body dealing with mobility and transportation in Bengaluru led to the BMLTA bill being passed in the state assembly. We also rallied to start the clean up of a massive landfill in Kodaikanal & emerged victorious, engaged over 35,000 citizens to demand a stay order on a flyover project in Bangalore, and joined Amazon workers in their struggle for humane wages & working conditions. Our journey thrives on collaboration. No single organisation can solve India’s challenges. Systemic change requires multi-stakeholder action. We work closely with other CSOs, citizens, governments and corporates. Together, we’re driving transformative change that echoes for generations.
