Mission Statement
SUKRUPA’s mission is to provide high-quality primary and secondary education to underprivileged children and young adults, giving them the resources to break the cycle of poverty and create stable, sustainable futures.
About This Cause
The journey: of SUKRUPA started with passion and purpose to create opportunities through education, for the underprivileged children from the slums of Bangalore. It has grown into stories of hope and success for many children who otherwise wouldn’t have had the means to pursue education. With over 500 first generation children in the regular school program and over 50 students supported for higher studies in college, SUKRUPA is creating opportunities for underprivileged children to fulfill their dreams by nurturing their talents through academics, creativity, sports and life skills. Most of the children at SUKRUPA are first-generation students born to young parents who are unskilled laborers who migrate from rural poverty to cities in search of livelihood and settle in slums. As they struggle for basic survival, education is not a priority. Even if children are sent to school, it is very likely that a majority of them will drop out when they are teenagers. This results in girls becoming young mothers at the age of 13 or 14 and boys a burden on a family's meager income. SUKRUPA’s programs are well thought and created for the sustainable development of the underprivileged and marginalized communities. Motivated to dream big Develop curiosity and creativity Learn from peers with teachers as facilitators Be responsible and accountable Disciplined to reach goals Stand up and speak up for what they believe in, Learn in a fearless space that allows them to follow SUKRUPA’s Core Values “Be Honest, Humble and Respectful Work Hard and Excel Have Integrity, Gratitude and Give Back” SUKRUPA’s Initiatives: SUVIDYA: SUKRUPA Education Centre provides high quality formal English medium education for about 500 First Generation students from preschool to 10th grade. Children here receive a well-rounded education that comprises academics, life-skills, creativity, midday meals and sports, games, and basic health care in a clean, friendly and happy environment. SUKALLP: An after-school life skills and leadership program for all our kids from the 5th to the 10th grade designed for pre-teens and teenagers to evolve as successful adults. In alignment with their interests, we organize special coaching in art, music, dance, theatre, design, public speaking, sports, leadership, and entrepreneurship. SUMARGADARSHAK: A scholarship and mentoring program to support the transition from school to college and university. An extension of SuKallp, its focus is on the formative teen years and fosters a safe and supportive environment to express themselves. Students here get guidance and coaching in their college curriculum, receive mentoring self-development, values, goal-setting, confidence, social responsibility, dealing with anxiety, stress, anger and many more. SuJanavikas: Skills Development and Entrepreneurship: This program enables women from villages to train in a skill that could evolve as a microenterprise. Women are empowered to improve their capabilities, run a thriving business, support their families and contribute to the economy and are trained in solid waste management, vertical gardening, composting, landscaping, maintaining nurseries and tailoring. The India Skills Report 2019 said that around 70 percent of the youth face problem due to lack of professional guidance in finding desirable jobs that worth their skills! We believe that our program will introduce our center and services to an extremely deserve underprivileged community with a proper platform to explore and develop their skills as it would help them to follow a right direction towards their career SUKRUPA EDUCATION CENTRE: The education center provides high quality formal English medium education to 500 students from preschool to 10th grade. Besides schooling, children receive nutritious meals and basic health care and thrive in a clean, safe, friendly and happy environment. The core foundation of the school program is an equal balance of academics, creativity through various arts, music, dance, values, life skills, technology, and sports in a friendly and happy environment. The balanced curriculum helps them to dream big, focus on education and prepare them to become college graduates, resulting in positively contributing young adults who are confident, globally aware, fiscally independent and personally responsible. To achieve a high-quality education program, SUKRUPA has pledged to impart the best of education and knowledge through experienced, passionate and committed teachers to equip children with the necessary skills to participate confidently in the current global community. Impact so far. Since the year 2014, SUKRUPA has had a 100% pass result in the 10th grade SSLC Board Exam with most students scoring 1st Class (above 60%), especially girls. Many of these children are now first-generation college students and have enrolled in prestigious colleges across the city. Almost all the teenage girls who are part of SUKRUPA programs are motivated to study well and to become independent, resulting in 99% completing 10th & 12th Grade. More than 50% of the girls have completed graduation and have secured dignified jobs and are supporting members of their families. This is a great achievement for SUKRUPA considering the norm which is an early teenage marriage followed by motherhood for which they are neither physically nor emotionally prepared. Since the year 2002, from the time of inception, 184 First Generation Learners have completed 10th grade and enrolled for higher education. SUKRUPA has helped 75 First Generation Learners to complete 12th grade and find suitable jobs. 20 first generation learners have completed graduation and are placed in reputed companies. All the children at SUKRUPA communicate in English. The number of children supported under formal education has increased from 400 to 486 children from this academic year. 52 students are part of the Choir Group at Bangalore School of Music The school dropout rate has reduced from 85% to 5% in the communities that we serve. 80 teenagers have completed “Turning Point” - A life-changing, life skill leadership initiative. There has been a significant increase in the enrollment of girl children in the school program. Case Story 3. Sundarapoo Sundarapoo, a first generation learner completed her high school at SUKRUPA in the year 2016 and did her 12th grade at Mount Carmel College, Bengaluru with the financial support of SUKRUPA. She is now continuing her B.A.- B.Ed (4 years Integrated Course) graduation in the same college with a specialization in Humanities and getting trained as a Teacher. She has three siblings who are also studying at SUKRUPA. Her father being bedridden for months, her mother is the only breadwinner of the family. Even among these odds, Sundarapoo is able to get a better education through SUKRUPA. Sundarapoo says that "It has been two weeks in college and I feel so happy and proud to be able to go to such a prestigious institution. I feel I’m lucky joining Mount Carmel College. I have made new friends and interacting with them is a new experience. I get to know about their stories, culture, and lifestyle. I’m studying History, Economics and Sociology and Education. The teachers are very friendly and co-operative. My economics teacher expresses her smiles at me when she takes the attendance and whenever I see her on the campus I greet her with a smile. I’m part of the National Social Service club where I can explore more about my subjects. I want to be a teacher someday and make my mother happy.
