Mission Statement
Empowering the beneficiaries by creating awareness & opportunities in Education & Employment
About This Cause
Background/context "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." - Nelson Mandela World Economic Forum, at its annual meeting at Davos in Jan 2024, while agreeing that India has the potential to become the world’s 3rd largest economy with a GDP of US$5Tn, has cautioned that India’s demographics will be advantageous to its growth story only if coupled with broad labour market reforms and human development measures to skill one of the world’s largest workforces and address youth unemployment. Harvard Business Review’s article "Is India the World’s Next Great Economic Power?" (Sep 2023) too had highlighted how India's unrealized demographic potential could derail this prophecy! Some shocking facts brought to light in this article are: Education and skill-building measures currently available are grossly inadequate for India's 1.4Bn+ population. Less than half of India's urban workers have full-time jobs. India’s female labor participation rate has been in a steady decline, having dropped from 32% in 2005 to 19% in 2021. Education being an investment in human capital formation, plays a crucial role in the economic growth and development of a nation. According to the World Bank, increasing the average years of schooling by one year can increase a country's GDP growth by 0.37%. Similarly, increasing the literacy rate by 1% can increase a country's GDP growth by 0.3%. Thus, Education & Employment need to be the cornerstones of India’s mantra for success. But India’s current Education situation leaves much to be desired! Facts about India’s Participation in Education compared to OECD Countries: (Source: oecd.org) % of 3-5 year-old children in early childhood and primary education in India is one of the lowest among OECD and partner countries with available data. (60.7 %, rank 38/41 , 2021) Enrolment rate of 6-14 year-olds in India is one of the lowest among OECD and partner countries with available data. (90.3 %, rank 42/44 , 2021) Enrolment rate among students aged 15-19 in upper secondary programmes in India is one of the lowest among OECD and partner countries with available data. (36 %, rank 43/45 , 2021) % of female students enrolled in upper secondary vocational programmes is one of the lowest among OECD and partner countries. (11.1 %, rank 43/43 , 2021) Level of upper secondary attainment among 25-34 year-olds is one of the lowest among OECD and partner countries with available data. (34.4 %, rank 44/44 , 2022) The Change Agent – DBM India Navasrushti International Trust (DBM INDIA) is a humanitarian organization working to create lasting change in the lives of children, families and communities living in poverty & injustice. DBM INDIA serves all people regardless of religion, caste, race, ethnicity or gender. It has set its objective as creating Hunger-Free-Communities. With a modest beginning of providing Midday meal in one school to 50 children, the organization has grown to a commendable force having its own infrastructure facilities providing education, health care, livelihood skills, empowerment and placements. DBM’s Relevance to National Goals: Aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, focusing on its emphasis on ensuring universal access to education and fostering holistic development. DBM has chosen the M-Ward (East) of Mumbai as its primary area of work, as this ward has the lowest HDI (Human Development Indices) amongst all the wards of Mumbai. Education Vertical Educational Interventions – This vertical has many sub-verticals under it. Thus there is a multi-pronged approach to improve the educational standards of the underserved children and schools especially in M-ward, Mumbai.
