Started in 1951, Ramakrishna Mission Balakashrama provides free boarding, lodging and educational facilities to 70 students belonging to economically backward families coming from rural area, irrespective of caste or creed. It also provides uniforms, textbooks, notebooks, school fees etc to the students. In the Balakashrama, the boys are encouraged to cultivate virtuous tendencies, acquire the art of social duty, develop refined tastes, cultivate self-respect, etc. One of the important features is that the boys are allowed to manage the affairs of the Balakashrama, including the upkeep of the premises, gaining thereby the spirit of self-reliance, dignity of labour, co-operation and personal effort. They participate in the daily routine of the Math such as the morning and evening congregational prayer. They are also taught to chant Vedic Hymns, Bhagavadgita etc. Distribution of Milk & Tiffin: About 200 poor students attending our coaching centre are distributed milk, tiffin and other toiletries regularly. We not only concentrate on their academic training but stress is also laid on over all development of personality. The students are also taught health & hygiene, music and other arts. Swami Vivekananda Free Coaching Centre - The Mission runs a free coaching centre for the benefit of the poor students. It was started in 2004. Experienced teachers give coaching to the students in an ambience conducive for study. More than 150 students from 5th to 9th standard benefit from this coaching centre. All the students are given milk and biscuits every day. They are also provided study materials like text books, note books, uniforms, school bags and umbrellas at the beginning of the year. Distribution of Scholarships: The Mission distributes Scholarships to meritorious poor students every year to pursue higher studies. Students are selected based on their merit, annual income of the family, their association with this institution and their character etc. The amount is distributed in a programme organized wherein resource persons interact with the students and help them inculcate value based ideas in their lives. Distribution of Study Materials: Every year about 200 poor students are distributed free study materials which include school bags, school uniforms, note books, umbrellas, slippers, stationery items etc. Youth Programmes – Conventions – Seminars: Youth are the future of our nation and it is on the youths that Swami Vivekananda had the greatest hope. We conduct seminars, conventions and youth programmes regularly in our Ashrama inviting resource persons of international repute who share their views and experiences and interact with the youth thus imbibing in them values, respect for our rich cultural legacy, and sense of social responsibility. We have already had the programmes for B Ed students, Post Graduate students in field of Social work, Degree Students, under Graduate Students, Engineering students etc. The response from both the participants as well as the institutes has been very encouraging and there has been great demand to conduct such programmes more and more.
