About This Cause

Bal Asha Trust was founded in 1985 in Mumbai, India. We save children who are destitute and found abandoned in life threatening conditions in toilets, railway stations, religious places, hospital and dustbins. We provide vulnerable children a safe home and give love, care, nutrition, medical, education and developmental needs through our programmes. We are recipient of the prestigious “Ahilyabai Holkar Award”, from the Government of Maharashtra, which recognises our efforts for children in Maharashtra. Our registered charity is one of India’s most trusted. Bal Asha Destitute children’s home Our centre in Mahalaxmi, Mumbai, serves as a home for newborns and children up to 12 years old who are found abandoned by the police in public places, or are safe surrendered by their birth parent/s, or transferred from other organizations within Maharashtra. We have healthy children with many others with special needs, physical or mental challenges and those who suffer from conditions like albinism, heart issues, cerebral palsy, hepatitis B, and HIV. The children receive medical attention from the best pediatricians and the required treatment is provided in top hospitals around the home. Bal Asha Trust has a committed team of trained professionals including social workers, doctors, para-medicals, speech & occupational therapists, psychologists, teachers, and care takers. They diligently attend to the medical, nutrition, educational, developmental and recreational needs of our children to give them love and best chance in life. We believe that every child should grow up in a family and make concerted efforts to reunite abandoned children with their families across India. We also support other NGO’s with similar efforts for children in their home under our HOPE project. Bal Asha Trust has been successful in placing many physically, mentally and medically special needs children like Hepatitis B+, HIV +, Malnourished, Heart problems, Skin disease, Intersex and Orthopedic problems and older children in Adoption. Bal Asha Child Development Centre We have a child development centre in Mazgaon in Mumbai which supports children with disabilities. We offer comprehensive pediatric assessments and therapies at nominal cost which benefits child’s health and reduces the financial burden on the family. Our developmental therapy team helps provide children with tools to navigate their social and physical world. Therapists and doctors employ a team-based approach to discuss each case. They also strive to assess the child’s family and surrounding environment for any contributing factors. Qualified doctors and therapists provide physiotherapy, speech support, occupational therapy, remedial education and psychological services. Our social workers also provide counseling to families. Bal Asha Educational Sponsorship We run a structured program supporting donors who wish to fund a child’s education. Typically, these children are from single-parent families, struggling to cover living costs beyond food and shelter. The donor receives a fact pack with the child’s identity and brief biographical details. Our trust monitors the programme and disburses funds which are used for text books, note books, school bags, geometry boxes, pens, pencils, uniforms and fees. A performance progress report is provided to the donor once a year. Our trust also provides the children with counseling, supplementary education, aptitude testing, and overall encouragement. Through this sponsorship, we have seen many children become successful young adults. Bal Asha Poshan Our newest project, Poshan (Nutrition), launched in August 2018, provides basic nutrition packets to malnourished children. The project has been successfully implemented in childcare centres, known as Anganwadis, in the Kamatipura (Red light) area of Mumbai as well as in Kolhapur city in south Maharashtra. The Mumbai project makes efforts for improving the health of children. The Kolhapur project focuses on providing nutrition to HIV sufferers, whose lives can be dramatically improved with a good nutrition.
